I made a PS for lunch at the Sci-Fi Diner. Our cast of characters includes myself, DH and DS age 3.
Can anyone offer any insight to the Sci-Fi Diner? What is the atmosphere like? The service? Anything I need to know before going there?

Thanks!

We ate at Sci-Fi fo the first time in December and we really liked it. You will be seated by servers on rollerskates and taken to your car to eat. It looks just like a drive-in from the 50's. There is a big movie screen showing 50's horror movies. I think you will have a great time.

My DS also age 3 loved Sci-Fi. He thought it was so cool sitting in the cars to eat. We also got him a drink with the glowing ice cube and that along with a milkshake kept him entertained the entire meal.

We went, my DW and son of 2. He also loved the ice cube, and know what? it is surprisingly quiet in that restaurant. The acoustics soak up the sound and you get to watch the movies, so all the kids are quiet. The food is also great, it is a great restaurant for a break in the middle of the hectic day.

This was a surprise for us! We were very pleased with our meal, burgers & fries for me, DH and DD9. DD7 had the grilled chicken and green beans, quite tasty and she was happy there was something other than burgers and hot dogs. "DO THEY THINK THIS IS ALL KIDS LIKE?"

The atmosphere is wonderful! I have always wanted to go to a Drive-In, and this experience completely filled the void. The service is excellent. You sit in an old fashioned car and watch black and white trailers and commercials from old drive-ins. It's dark, so you feel like you're outside at night time, watching a movie on the old Drive-In screen. It's not extremely pricey (expect to pay between $12.99 - $17.99 for an entree). Your DS will love sitting in the car, I am sure. I highly recommend this restaurant. I am going there for my second time when I visit WDW in 2 weeks!

Thank you, everyone, for your input! I just bought the DDE card and wanted to try someplace new. We've never spent much time at MGM in the past so it will be a dining first for us at that park.

We love going here, but for now on we will only order "simple" meals like burgers. I ordered a pasta meal and it was beyond disgusting!

My DS3 loved it. It was great food too! The burgers, onion rings and shakes were very good. My kids enjoyed the glow in the dark ice cubes! They are an additonal fee but worth the entertainment & nightlights at the hotel! I would suggest getting a more clear drink than milk for the best effect. Our waitor took our picture of all of us in the car. It was a ton of fun! My mom and I split and sandwich and onion rings and were plenty full. Have fun! :earsgirl:

We ate there last week and I was surprised at how quiet it is in there. Wondeful. We had burgers and they were good. DH loved his milkshake. After being in the bright sun, we enjoyed eating outside "at night."

The only thing I will mention because you have a 3 year old is that the restaurant is dark and my 3 year old son did not like that. (And I wouldn't say he is afraid of the dark.) He complained alot, so we sat him closest to the table lighting and he was pacified. Also, some of the movie trailers they show have monsters that we find amusing but that scared my 2 and 3 year olds.

I got a PS for our visit in June, just in case. I remember when my husband and I went many years ago and the wait for a table was forever, so now going with our 4 and 6 year olds, I definately don't want to wait forever! I'm guessing this is one you wouldn't have to reserve 90 days ahead of time, but for sure before you get there.

Hi, just a quick question to add. Do you need priority seating for the sci-fi?

From my limited WDW experience, I would say most definitely get a PS for Sci Fi, if at all possible.

For our June 04 trip, I made a PS on the 90 day mark, but did not get our 1st choice of sitting.... I had hoped we could eat very early, and it seems like the earliest available was 12:30. (This was for Tuesday, which they said was their busiest day due to EMH.)

I decided we'd try to check in early, but was told that we would be definitely waiting until our 12:30 ps time, so it really was useless to check in early.... we were hot and needed to sit down, so we checked in early, stayed and browsed the book store, which was packed.... I want to say we STILL weren't seated until 1:00, or later.

As I was waiting to check in, people were turned down who did not have ps-- and were told the earliest they could receive a ps for that evening was something like 9:30!

We enjoyed it-- I think we felt REALLY lucky to get in-- and will return on our trip in 2006, but FOR SURE with a ps!!!

We (DH, DS 5 yr. old and me) will be at Sci-fi this summer. What is a glowing ice cube?

thanks,
Kris

We did Sci-fi in Jan and my DD 3.5 yrs was scared most of the meal. It is very dark where you eat. My husband laughs that he thinks he had a burger but he couldn't really see it. We had attempted to get in for lunch in Dec but they had no seatings, so I would make a PS.

Sci Fi is great for lunch - DH and I split a burger ( they are huge) and a order of onion rings - YUMMY! The kids both had kids meals and shakes! We have enjoyed lunch there twice! :flower:

Definitely get a PS...the lines get long...

And yes, it is a wonderful place...especially to escape from the midday heat...and the popcorn chowder and onion rings are to die for....YUM! ::yes::

Sci FI is great. It's a very fun atmosphere and we always enjoy the burgers and fries and shakes while watching the cheesy movie trailers. :) I have eaten there on pretty much every trip I have ever taken to WDW and it's one of my faves. Never had bad service or a bad burger yet. ;)

Be aware though, some little kids get scared because it is a darker atmospshere as they turn the lights down for the movies.

Hate to say, it but Sci-Fi wasn't one of our favorites. The food was just OK, but the atmosphere was really strange. It was a large open area that was really quiet. It seemed like every word you said, everyone in the place could hear. There was some B movie playing with the volume really low, that had zero entertainment value. A party of 3 would be better than a party of 5. We had the GP's with us who sat in the back seat of a little car that was our table and we had to turn around to see them. My suggestion. 50's prime time Cafe'. Better food and atmosphere.
