It looks intriguing - sitting in the cars and all. Do you watch a movie while you eat? It seems like something young children would enjoy. Am I right? Worth an ADR?

Yes young kids do love it as adults do to. We don't like the dinnner menu anymore since they switched it a few years ago but u might if not lunch is good.

We also went for lunch and our boys 4 and 7 loved it. They show retro sci fi movie trailers and at least one cartoon in a continuous loop. (It starts to repeat before the meal is over.) We sat our kids in the front row and we sat behind them which was fun for them as well. We had heard negative things about the food, but we got burgers and shakes, the kids got pizza I think and we all enjoyed it very much.

The food, even the burgers, leave something to be desired but the atmosphere is absolutely unique and fun, for all ages. I think we eat here every trip, no matter who we take with us, because everyone loves it. We prefer to go for lunch because it doesn't bother us as much to get a yucky lunch as it does a yucky dinner. :lmao:

I must be close to the only person on this board that thinks Sci Fi is the pits.
We won't go back. Food wasn't that good, long long wait, and very cold in the restaurant. May be we just arrived at a bad time.

The 7 year old in our group never took his eyes off the screen. The movies are clips from old, silly, scarey movies. He had a bad dream that night. I think he got into the movies just a little to much.

Take the kids. They'll probably enjoy it.

Depends how young they are I think. My kids were 2.5 and 4.5 and the movie barely held the 4 yr olds attention. There was only 1 cartoon in the loop so when that was on she would watch. She's pretty good in restaurants anyway thank goodness. But our 2 yr old just wanted to climb around in the car - it was actually one of our worst experiences with him at any of the restaurants. I think the atmosphere is neat and I liked that about it but I was not impressed by the food at all. We've eaten at Hollywood & Vine and are eating at Brown Derby this time and don't think we'll be back to Sci Fi for a few more years.

No, my kids don't love it. The monster clips - not scary to 99% of other kids - scare them a little. The novelty of the cars wore off fast and they wanted to leave. The highlight was that they were able to order shakes on the DDP which was a great coup (last time we were there was January, 2009 so YMMV). I don't think the food is very good at all. I've been there three times now and I doubt we'll be back.

Well we didn't have a great time with our 2 boys (3 and 16months at the time). While I did enjoy our food there (we were there for lunch) the experience wasn't that great. I think the boys needed to be a little older. They do show some cartoons on the screen that my ds3 watched. I didn't like the seating arrangement. Dh and Ds3 sat in front of me and ds1. Ds1 climbed all over and hard to converse with dh sitting in front of me. However I did notice they have a few regular tables that i think would accomodate a high chair so if you do go really try to get one of those. ( Although we did say we needed a high chair we didn't get one.) I think I will go back when they are older though.

We had lunch at Sci Fi about a month ago & had a great time. We enjoyed the cool, dark atmosphere and our 4 yr old loved eating in the car & watching the monster movie clips. I had a very good burger, my wife had a good sandwich & our son ate his hot dog - no complaints from any of us regarding the food.

We're planning to give it a try with a 3 year old and almost 5 year old. I am thinking that they'll like the novelty of it! Also there really aren't any better lunch options at DHS, as the CS options do not look appetizing at all. The food at 50s prime time isn't that appealing to us and our kids would be too little to appreciate the antics that we read about, so we knew we'd either do Mama Melrose or Sci Fi as our OOP meal at DHS. We picked Sci Fi because of the cars and because of the peanut butter cake dessert (DH is a peanut butter fanatic). We figure that good burgers/reubens would be nice compared to the fast food CS options.

When I was little I was obsessed with Grease, so going to "drive-in theatre" was awesome. :D I still remember being transfixed by the atmosphere.

My son & I have eaten there twice. You have to at least do it once. It was fun & I love the setup, but it is WAY too dark in there. Even with the very dim lights on the tables in the cars, I just could not see my food & I can't get past that.

That is why I won't eat at San Angel Inn. That place looks MORE dark inside than Sci-Fi & if I can't see my plate, that is not my kind of place to eat at, just a personal preference. :santa::santa::santa:

My son enjoyed it the one time we went because of the atmosphere. The only dissapointment was that it was just me and him and they put us in the backseat of a car behind a couple. I'd personally prefer the picnic tables!

The food was only OK so we've never had a desire to go back.

My kids, now 6 and 8 like it, but when they were younger and we tried it, they were both a little scared. First they were worried because it was so dark, and then some of the movies scared them - even though they're old B movie trailers. Once they got used to it, they were fine.

My 2 boys love it, it's DS7's favorite place!! Make sure you tell the hostess that you want to sit in a car, otherwise they may put you in a table. The boys love to watch the old movies. It is somewhat dark, so don't plan on doing any reading of your maps or other notes. have fun!

DS loved food. DD loved fancy light up cup drink came in. They show clips of old drive-in movies. The only one I can remember was a portion of "The Blob." My DD freaked so we changed seats around. Atmosphere is great food was good. I enjoyed. Movie kept kids busy while waiting for food. Air conditioned!
