Sci-Fi Dine in & Young Children???

Hi!! The Sci-Fi Dine in was a favourite eat of ours when it was just the two of us, however our next trip will be with our then 16 month old daughter.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this restaurant as we are having a very 'healthy debate' about whether its a good idea or not at the minute!!!

My youngest was that exact age when we ate there last year. We all had a great time. She sat beside me in the car, watched the screen, ate her food, and played with her sister. We had never been before that, and we all loved it.

I'm curious as well. My children are 5, 3, 13 months. We have an ADR for our trip in June and I hope they enjoy it.

Are the movies short clips that continue to rotate through the day or is it a long movie. Trying to figure out how the whole drive-in thing works.

i think my DH would get a kick out of sitting in a car to eat, but my DD5 is very nervous about scary shows. (she still hasn't fully recovered from ToT last year ) to narrow it down, she would not like anything with blood or people getting hurt in some way, even if it's implied (i.e. the little girl getting struck by lightning on ToT).

she's a gentle spirit, what can i say?

so if anyone has watched all of the rotating movie clips, please fill all of us first-timers in? thanks!!

We ate at Sci Fi with my 6 and 3 year old nieces last November. Things went well at first, but then I noticed the 6 year old wasn't eating and had gotten very quiet. I asked her what was wrong and she started crying. She said the movies made her scared. Her Grandma blocked her view so that she could no longer see the screen, but she was done. We are planning a return trip for this year and she always says, "But not the scary restaurant!" So, a lesson learned for me.

how grateful i am for your post, Julylady. I am so sorry to hear about your niece but i had a similiar situation when my daughter insisted on ToT (which she LOVED exceeept for the intro movie in the library). Sometimes kiddies are just sensitive to things and we as parents have to screen that stuff out. We will pass on Sci-fi this time and hit it when she's older or if DH and I visit kid-free ever. THANK YOU SO MUCH, from the bottom of my heart.

Can someone please elaborate on what exact clips might be bothersome or scary for a young person? We have an ADR and are very excited for this place, but also have a somewhat sensitive 6 yr old. I would hate for her to become upset over dinner and lose any magic. This is a girl who, at 5, absolutely hated a special screening of E.T. ('member that one?) at our local theatre. She still talks the 'mean' movie and has asked us not to say it's name because it scares her... Loved RnR tho! Does all roller coasters- but no scary or dramatic shows.

This is just our experience...

Our DS age 23 months was scared to death of all characters. We have older children so we had several character meals and it was becoming quite a chore to keep him calm. We were almost ready to skip Sci Fi because we thought it might be too much for him. We had a plan all set up where I would leave with DS if he got too upset and DH would order my meal to go.....

Surprise, surprise!! Our 23 month old LOVED Sci-Fi! It was our most relaxed meal the whole trip.

I think all kids are different. Heck, what worked for my older children at his age sometimes scares the daylights out of him.

Wow, needle in the eye while I am eating a meal??? mmmm, we have made reservations there in September and have never eaten there. We have an 18 year old neice, 8 year old girl and 4 year old son with Autism. I don't think the 4 year old knows enough to be scared, so I don't have to worry about so much what he will see as long as there isn't alot of screaming scenes and the movie clips are not really loud, so that it is distracting. My mom wondered if they have a scene from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Now I am worried. A year ago, my daughter watched Aladdin 2 and slept in bed with us for a week. She just now saw Pirates and she has been fine so far.

We booked it because of the cars. My son is facinated with cars. So I thought it would be a great thing for him. Now I am wondering if I made the right choice. Can some one give me some more information on this?

We've gone with our kiddos (when they ranged in age from 3 months to 5 years) and sometimes I thought that the movie clips were a little bit much...but I always told them that if something looked scary to them, then they should just look away. I think my oldest turned his head two times, but he was fine. He loves it there...just looking around and sitting in the car keeps them very entertained. I would go and enjoy. I find that if you don't make a big deal about something, then the kids don't either.

My kids were 14 months and not yet 3 when we went...They were not scared at all...In fact they sat sooooo quietly watching the movies....DH and I actaully got to enjoy our meal because they were so quiet and well-behaved...They both ate well....We all enjoyed our meal so much that we have been back twice since than....I really do not think the movie clips are scarey and I have one child (the older one) that gets scared easily...

I do suggest asking for a table car with small children because you can sit across from each other and the baby can sit in a high chair.

Did you ever watch Mystery Science Theater 3000? That is the level of "scary" that the clips are. One of them I remember just because I had seen it the week before on MST3K. The one with the guy that doesn't want to grow anymore (Cue the robots to scream "i'm a toys r us kid" every time he said it!)
