Sci Fi allergy reviews?

DH would like to eat at Sci Fi Diner in our next trip, but looking at the menu, I'm not sure what my kids would eat besides a bunless burger with fries (I know they carry Ener-G rolls but my kids can't eat them due to citrus fiber in the buns). I know everybody has different lists of allergies but I'd love to hear what the chefs were able to make for some of you with different allergies. My kids have difficult lists of allergies. DD13 can't eat gluten, milk, eggs, yeast, citrus, artificially added MSG or peanuts (this one's mild and I don't worry about cross contamination). DD10 can't eat milk, sesame, citrus, cranberry, blueberry, hazelnuts, brazil nuts or peanuts (this ones's mild and I don't worry about cross contamination) or raw apple skins, raw pear skins or raw carrots. I'm torn as to what they'll be able to eat. I suppose DD10 can eat plain pasta with marinara sauce; anybody know if it's at all spicy? The sauce at LeCellier she said was too spicy last year.

Thanks for any insight any of you may have. I'm not finding much through board searches, other than the gluten free review by 3prettyprincesses (great review BTW) but unfortuanately my girls can't eat a single thing that was in that review other than the burger which would have to have the bun left off which can be frustrating for them and is something they can get at home.

All my hot dogs and hamburgers were served on tapioca buns this weekend. I was really pleased with the care given by WDW food servicce this weekend. It was wonderful.

They are good with allergies there but don't really think out of the box or maybe they don't have lots of ingredients. I was able to get a salad and either grilled chicken or bunless burger. I'm not gluten free but can't eat the enerG rolls either. They could also do a basic pasta with chicken or shrimp, oil, garlic, and veggies if I wanted. I could also eat the onion rings which are pre-made frozen but I highly doubt they are gluten free. They did not have a single thing I could eat for dessert though. Can't do ice creams because I'm allergic to all legumes and everything but Haggen Daz uses bean gums. Can't eat raw fruit. Everything else had a nut warning.

Thank you both!

Unfortunately those tapioca rolls don't work for my girls because of additional allergies. Sigh..... I sure wish the first few chefs who offered DD10 those roles realized that. We couldn't figure out what was making her sick because we had never considered them for her at home (she's not gluten free and we can find regular grocery store buns that work for her at home; we already knew they wouldn't work for DD13 due to another allergy). Live and learn.

The lack of ingredients is what has me worried. It doesn't look like there are a lot of options for dishes to modify at Sci Fi. I wonder if they serve the allergy chicken tenders there? It's always a safe standby meal for them. DD13 would probably like the steak strips that come with the been and blue but she won't want a big wedge of lettuce with nothing else (well, maybe bacon but that's it). Hmmmm.... I bet they'd do fries with that instead of the lettuce wedge.

I'll have to think some more about this ADR. I know DH wants to try it.

Any other experiences here?

Have you emailed the special diet folks @ Disney? When I fill out the form with our ADR's, I now list specific things that DD likes. Her allergies are much easier to deal with than those in your family, but it seems like most chefs really paid attention to what I listed.

In years past, I just listed what she was allergic to. I didn't go into any detail about what she likes. Our meals were fine, but nothing special. (Please know I'm not complaining - I'm happy that she can eat safely at WDW. :thumbsup2)

Now, I am more specific when I send back that dietary restriction form. DD has hade some wonderful dining experiences since I started being more specific. When we went to breakfast at Tusker House, DD could not eat most of the "fun" stuff - pastries, muffins, etc. DD was thrilled when the chef came to our table with Divvies cookies for her (what kid wouldn't love cookies for breakfast? :cool1: ). The chef did this on his own as we certainly wouldn't have thought to ask for cookies for breakfast. Also, the chef at Boma made her an enormous ice cream sandwich out of Divvies cookies and Mickey sprinkles, which was much better than the dish of vanilla ice cream she had the year before.

So, perhaps if you are able to list specific items (and maybe brands?) that will work for your family, they would be able to meet your needs. We are going to Sci Fi in a few weeks, but since DD is only allergic to nuts and peas, she'll be able to find things on the menu that she can have. Dessert is always the tough one for us.

Good luck! :goodvibes

Thanks for the suggestion Julie! Back when Brenda was running Special Diets, putting comments about their likes on that form made a huge difference and we had chefs call us about their preferences and make special things ahead of time just for them. Since she left, that form is pretty much ignored in my experience. Chefs on our most recent trip told me that they didn't even see the form. It's frustrating. The chefs still do their best with what they have but it gets frustrating since many of the premade allergy foods at WDW aren't safe for at least one of my girls, sometimes both. The Special Diets department seems to be doing less and less. Heck, when getting ready for our February trip I was updating my list of what safe snacks can be found where and when I found a discrepancy in where I could find a certain item at MK and asked, the answer I was given was just "you can find those at most places at MK" instead of an actual list of locations (and I know for a fact that the item in question is only available at a few locations so it was super frustrating). In general, I don't count on those forms even though I do still fill them out. Thank goodness the chefs are so amazing, but they are still limitted by what they have on hand.

It sounds like you've gotten some great chefs!! I love when they make recommendations rather than just asking us what we want. They come up with things I wouldn't have necessarily thought to ask for. The chefs at WDW are the BEST!!

Maybe you can try to email special diets and specifically ask for the chef to email or call you. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But it's probably worth a try. About a month or so ago I emailed and specifically asked about Tutto and Via Napoli. I then received a phone call from the chef there telling me what I can have. I am only gluten free, but if you tell them all of the limitations of your daughters maybe they can be more accomodating for you.
And if it doesn't, try again. I have gotten different people at special diets answering me at different times. Hopefully you can get one that will actually help you with your situation instead of giving you the standard answer. Good luck, I hope it works.

i would send and email and be sure to note all allergies on the reservation.

i didn't note mine because i checked the menu and everything looked safe. until i took a giant bite of the chocolate/peanut butter cake that was filled with walnuts. the menu had no mention of this anywhere. i mentioned it to the server and he just took the plate away--didn't offer anything else. we left to get back to the hotel to get medication. my throat was getting very tight by the time we got to the room and i had hives all over my chest and neck. it just really shocked me that there was/still is no mention of nuts in a dessert. lesson learned--always note!

I'm so sorry you had a reaction. Definitely have to ask oneverything because I've found things like the Mickey cheese ravioli they serve has sesame. You'd never guess that huh?

I ALWAYS ask even if I can't imagine why a food would contain a particular allergen. You just never know. I'd rather spend a few extra minutes each and every time than take a chance, and we're not even dealing with life threatening allergies. With life threatening allergies I can't imagine not asking.

I'll definitely be email special diets but I'm waiting until early July for that. I don't like to email more than 1.5 months before the trip because I know they'll send attachments with food info but if I contact them this far out then the info will be out of date by the time we get there (had that happen before where items had changed between getting the attachments and taking our trip). I did book the ADR and worst case scenario my kids will have the tenders. They love those so it'll be fine. I'm sure we'll enjoy the experience.
