Schools will be open through the evening.

Second, Kerry will create the “School’s Open ‘Til 6” afterschool program, expanding afterschool opportunities and ensuring they meet the demands of overstretched parents. Kerry’s plan focuses on three goals: first, meeting the needs of working parents by keeping afterschool programs open late and offering transportation; second, fostering strong values through mentoring and community service; and third, improving educational quality. Kerry’s plan will serve 3.5 million children, an increase of more than 2 million children from the level today.

And this will be paid for how and by whom??

Perhaps if parents weren't overtaxed, they wouldn't have to work two jobs to pay for child care. They could care for their children themselves.

Well, it's interesting to see that you can't back up any of the garbage that was spewn forth in your original post.

Kerry’s childcare tax credit will be fully paid for by new proposals to close corporate tax shelters. His expansion in afterschool is financed through his Education Trust Fund, paid for by rolling back the Bush tax cuts for families making more than $200,000 per year.

You see, it's very simple. Senator Kerry wants to invest in our children. w wants to invest in his rich friend's pockets.
;)

But, come now Dawn, attack the idea that we should repeal tax cuts that favor the wealthy. Let's go c-r-a-z-y  with it!

The idea that we should again have 4 more years of class warfare and punish the taxpayers who create jobs in this economy to pay for child care is absurd.

What is really absurd is that I have paid so far over $80,000 to send my kids to college. Oldest DH graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering 2 years ago and can't find a job in his field because the current administration is making it very easy for companies to send jobs overseas.

Right now that DS is working as a retail clerk. Thankfully, he isn't married with kids yet. But I often wonder, what are these people who are working in the service industry long hours going to do for childcare? They have house payments, car payments, insurance payments, etc. and they sure can't do it on 2 minimum wage jobs!

All this talk of an improving economy sure hasn't hit MY state yet!

Amidst many other absurdities, can someone please explain to me, FTLOG, why a family with a stay at home fricking parent should receive a $5,000 childcare credit?? ?!!!!!!!!?

Now THAT is a really good question! I would guess it has somethng to do with looking for votes.

woo woo, here comes the "don't forget about the islamo fascists" again. speaking of red herrings...

The only child care programs I have seen in schools have been privately funded not government - the parents pay. I think it should stay that way and fail to understand why Kerry wants to throw a ton of government money into it.

well, having done a report about this for work recently, i am well armed. LOL

the existing program targets urban areas where many parents are single-parents and have to work at shift-type jobs. these programs are largely juvenile delinquency prevention programs, designed to keep the kids out of trouble (most crimes with juveniles as the perps or victims happen between the hours of 3-6). at the same time the programs are keeping them out of trouble, they train them with job skills (like how to use computers, etc) and educational enrichment. a recent cost benefit analysis of a similar program in LA showed that these kinds of programs actually SAVE taxpayers money.

public policy is not black and white, sorry.

well, I'm not exactly sure what stay at home parents have done to deserve the term "fricking" but

I believe this is renewing an idea originally proposed by Republicans during the Clinton Presidency. The thought is that it is that lower income families who go from two paychecks to one paycheck in order to be with their children have "childcare costs" equal to if not greater than those who are writing checks to outside agencies. They just don't have receipts to show to be able to claim the childcare tax credit. I believe the original plan had an income limit that phased it out over higher incomes just like the childcare credit. In short, it was a plan to make it econimically easier for one parent to be able to quit their job and stay at home.

None of the articles give much detail on what exactly Kerry is proposing in this regard. These are just my assumptions.

That's not what I meant, TF.

What a bunch of crap. (I know it's not your bunch, and you're just relaying it.)

Did he graduate with good grades from a decent school and is he willing to relocate? My state is dying for more people with an education - biggest drawback we have to the economy in Arkansas is lack of college educated workers - especially engineers. Unemployment rate in NW Ark is about 2%.

Red Herring.

Oh, well. It is related to government spending and how our tax dollars are being spent. Sorry if you don't like it.

What I think is outrageous is that the taxpayer would be expected to pay for your children, when it is clearly a parental responsibility.

Wow, then do you mean that people without children should not have to pay taxes to educate yours? One would think that should be your responsibility.

Nope, perhaps a credit is given for one parent to stay home and actually parent, like you and I did.
Both parents work, the child is given over to a day care provider to raise your child and it is not because of taxes it is because it is a materalistic society.
You are in a very good position to rail, your DH is a physician, you are a nurse, you have every incentive in the world to want to keep more of what you earn and not give a damn about anyone else less fortunate. You have been truly blessed.
You support a war that is, to say the least, insane. You spew forth comments that have yet to come close to fact, Islamic facists, really Dawn! Next you will be telling us there are WMDs over there. Perhaps, you can find them. Yet, you rail about taking care of the one thing that is important to our future. Our children.
I cannot help but believe IF you were in a different circumstance and your children were younger and you had to work, your tune would change; VERY FAST.
I live outside the box, I do care what happens to the children of the USA and if this is one thing that can help change the tide, I am all for it.
BTW, I am NOT a Kerry supporter.

My kids old school had free supervised childcare until 5:30 every day of the school year.

So this is not a new idea to me! I loved it! They loved it!

Our afterschool is overseen/run by the school system. It's called
Latchkey and we pay $50 per week for it unless qualifying for
free lunch or other subsidy programs and then it's on a graduated
scale. My friend who's husband left her, disappeared leaving two
children and a spouse who did not have a job, got free child care
after school for two years while she went to school to learn a
skill. She is now fully and gainfully employed thanks to being able
to get assistance and pays just like I do, $50 a week per child. A
great example for the system working like it's supposed to.

She finally found her DH, btw and is the process of suing him for divorce and support. He's in another city with another woman and a baby. Scum. Not her fault and thank goodness the programs were in place as a safety net for her and her children.

He graduated from a top notch Michigan University with a .3.65 GPA. He also speaks Japanese. He is willing to relocate. He has sent out resumes all over the country. He's been looking for a job for 2 years now....and I can tell you, it's been tough!
