Isn't it weird all the different ways that schools do it? I am up in Northern CA around Sacramento and our school started in August (around the 23rd) and we get MLK off as well as all the usuals, Labor day, Memorial day etc and for our LONG breaks they get a week off at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas a week for President's week which this year happens to be the 15-19th and then a week at easter. Our last day of school is the 11th. When "I" was in school it NEVER started till after labor day but always got out around the 1st or 2nd week of June BUT we didn't get out for Thanksgiving until the wed before (meaning we were AT school on that wed and only ever got Thur and Fri off) and we always used to get just 2 mondays off for Presiden'ts week. Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday. And when I used to work we only get ONE day off which is "president's day" which is like the 22nd of Feb or something. So they have DEF changed it all around.
Here though everything is centered around holidays though. I know some states get special things off for things like Rodeo as the person from Arizona said and I know I heard that NJ has a special thing that they take off for. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called but it had nothing to do with any particular holiday. I think it was called Jersey week or something like that. And I think I heard someone say one time that Utah people have a homeschool week or something so it is interesting the different breaks that other states observe. I know there was rumors here that with our lousy budget they were talking about cutting even more days of school out. So who KNOWS what might happen???
