Schools close in Atlanta for Rita

The governor has asked the schools in metro Atlanta to close on Monday and Tuesday to conserve fuel. The missed days will be treated as "snow days" and made up at the end of the year.

Maybe someone can explain this to me.

If the schools are closed...and the kids aren't in school....are working parents supposed to stay home and take care of them? Or try and find child care between now and Monday...pay for that and drive them there?

Maybe saving gas for the state....but what is it costing parents?

When my kids don't go to school on Mon. and Tues., we'll probably drive to see a movie or some other activity so I'll still be driving. I can't see that the energy conservation is significant enough to justify the closure.

Also, those parents who can't work on those days won't be contributing to our economy.

Thanks....I don't have kids...but I still didn't get it! And it still doesn't make sense...at least to me!

Since I have sinus and ear infection....won't be going anyplace...have to take today and tomorrow off from work...then supposed to be off Mon-Wed...bet I get called in

The thought is that the buses won't run which will save hundreds of gallons of fuel. I teach at a private school and both of my kids attend private schools. They are all open. In my opinion, this whole day off to conserve gas is silly.

School buses are usually diesel.

And on the news it is showing, as some people predicted, that his request has panicked people and there are lines to fill up again.

And many people on the news are saying "Oh...we have a four day weekend...let's take a trip!"...okay this is saving gas how?

Feeling bad about going out to get soup and gingerale for this infection....but figure that is considered an Emergency!

Plus people assumed he knew something and RACED out to fill up their tanks creating their own temporary shortage.

I haven't lived here long, but if this guy keeps these idiot moves up I will remember come election time.

County schools in Thomasville GA, (Where I go to school) are closed too. I was excited.

Color me ignorant about school bus fuel consumption - wow, I had no idea!!!

However, I don't think the governor really gave much thought to what dual-income families will do with their kids on short notice.

I think I would be most upset at the thought that there wouldn't be enough time to plan a trip DH and I work opposite shifts so we wouldn't have a child care problem, but no way could I get vacation time on such short notice!

Seriously? I'm not in this situation, but if my governor called for fuel conservation I'd do my best to do it. The kids and I would hole up at home (probably with a bunch of my working friend's kids) and just chill. I'd save driving for essential stuff only for a few days. If just 50% of people could do this - it would save a TON of fuel.
