Schools and Halloween

In our town, the school from pre-K to 2nd grade has a Halloween parade and party but they only wear the costume during the parade and party and they still call it a "Halloween party" not a "Havest party".

Third grade to sixth still have Halloween parties but not as big a deal and no parade, no costumes.

Both schools have a Christmas party but call it a holiday party.

Valentine is celebrated in the pre-K to 2nd grade school, not the 3rd to 6th grades.

Do you let your kids pick seperate halloween costumes to trick or treat in? Or if they are an artist for school are they artists for trick or treating too?

Yes they pick something else for halloween if they want. Sometimes they will change into different costumes during the evening on halloween...

Often times the "costume" for school is something they make from stuff we already have. The ToT costumes tend to be store bought- but my kids get inventive at times.

For Homecoming Week- at dd16's high school- they had "super hero day" and she dressed up like Underdog- (long sleeved red tshirt, with a felt U in white, blue cape, puppy ears made from head band and felt)- she is trying to decide if she will revist Underdog or go for something else this year. A few years back she went as "shocked"- she burnt holes into a tshirt worn over another- then teased out her hair really wildly.

We never know if it will be hot or cold on Halloween- so we usually look for something that can be converted to meet the temperature outside.

Our old school let the kids dress up but since that one closed and we are in a bigger one we have Orange and Black day.

Less of an interruption in class and no pieces of costumes lost. Plus that is a long day for them to be in costume and then again at night. I like this way better.

We still have the Halloween crafts and treats that day just not in costume.

Kindergarten and First Grade change into their costumes, have a parade around Main Street TorTing at the Town Hall, Library, and Post Office, and then have a party (all during class hours).

Second through Fifth Grades all have class parties.

DS7 is in second grade this year, so won't wear a costume at school, but I did buy him a Halloween t-shirt to wear.

They children were in Catholic school and all those years the school never let them wear Halloween costumes, but only the pre-schoolers and kinders. Now they are in public school, I think the kids can dress-up. I hope so, this would be really fun for them since they only did it but one time only at their old school.

My boys go to Catholic School and we do a Storybook Celebration every year, so they have to dress up as a Storybook character that also has to be approved by the teacher. My youngest is going to dress up as Cat in the Hat, my oldest wants to be a Knight.

We have a Halloween party and parade. We prefer the kids come to school with their costumes on because it takes up to much time to have to dress 19 Kindergarteners.

My younger DD is in 3rd grade and they have the kids bring their costumes to school and then there is a parade at 1:30 followed by classroom parties. Parents are allowed at the parade but only class parents are allowed at the party.

My elder DD is in 5th and the kids can come dressed all day and they also have a parade but parents are not allowed - I'm going since I'm on the yearbook committee so I get to go and take photos

Our school system doesn't have Christmas Parties but Winter Parties to be politically correct, no religious things can be put in any of the goodie bags or items sent in from home for the party. The funny thing is that we have a lot of Jewish friends who say Merry Christmas to us and not Happy Holidays - go figure!

My school lets us dress up for the dance and for the whole school day on the 31st.

Nope. No costumes, no candy. They ignore Halloween as if it doesn't exist.

I can't answer for her, but our school is a "uniform mandatory" school. No cute t-shirts.

My son in elementary school has a party. They change into their costumes after lunch and have a parade around the school, then classroom parties. Since he was in K, though, it has been the darned "fall festival". 5 years previous to that I know it was Halloween when DD#1 was still there.
I was OK with the fall festival thing until I found out another school in the same district still has Halloween. I would think this would be a district-wide issue where all 4 elementaries would be the same.
This is his last year so thank goodness they didn't change it. They also have a holiday party (which all of the kids call a Christmas party anyhow, just like they call the fall festival Halloween) and then valentine's.
I take 1/2 day for Halloween to help every year and this is it for me. . I'll miss it next year. Of course one year at the HS where I work I wore a "scream" outfit and walked the halls incognito scaring the crap out of freshmen.
They are sucking the fun out of schools by getting rid of these "fun" things. By the time I have grandkids in school (god forbid) I wonder how they will handle these things.

My daughters school has a halloween parade and all the kids dress up. There are a couple kids that don't celebrate halloween and those few go sit in the office while the other kids parade and then have their halloween party.

Our school does nothing, no costumes, no mention of Halloween, no party, no cupcakes - NOTHING!

Our old school in NJ was great, everyone got dressed up even the principal and they would do a parade outside around the school and parents can come and watch, they would then have a party.

My DS will still ask why can't we do anything for Halloween in school here.

The school in SC - only allowes 2 parties a year, Holiday and end of year.

When I first started teaching, my school was a K-4 school and we had a parade. The kids would dress up at the end of the day and then parade, party, and then they would go home.

They changed around our school after that and my school is now 3-6. New principal too. He decided that the kids were too old, so nobody is allowed to dress up, the parade was canned and if we choose to have a party, it is the last 30 minutes of the school day.
