School Using Social Security Number

I always l eave that section blank when they ask for my kids social. I would be suprised if my school system went to that method for lunches, since a large population of kids are illegal and have no SS#.

I agree that using social security numbers for kids is not a good idea. I have seen over the past several years school forms with a spot to enter SS# and I leave it blank. They don't use it for a student ID and as far as I'm concerned they don't need it. My son did miss out on a trip to the state university because when I filled out his paperwork I intentionally left the SS# blank. The school called and asked why it was blank and I said I felt uncomfortable giving out his number and they could not provide me with a good reason why it was necessary but stated he couldn't go on the trip if I didn't provide so he didn't go. Identify theft is a valid concern and children's SS# are a prime target so it makes no sense to have them floating around all over the place.

Most colleges have either changed or are in the process of changing their systems using SSN's as student ID numbers. I can understand that for an old system it might take a while to switch to a new way of issuing ID numbers but why set up a new system this way? Somebody's not using their common sense. MY response to this would be a reply back with something like:

While I appreciate the fact the system is new and there are problems to be worked out, this delay in removing the SS # is not acceptable. Please remove the number from your system and furnish my dd with a "generic" or Student number immediately for the school use.




Keep on the Principal every day and maybe it will help speed up the process.

Yeah, I might tell the principal to cut the political crap too! lol! Is this what our world is coming to? Principals who are trained to behave like politicians? Good grief! This is a security and privacy issue. You should have the right to refuse their public use of this number. In Ohio, we can choose NOT to provide it to just about anyone except the govt. of course.

That doesn't make any sense. Our school district uses Mealpay as well & my kids are linked by their student ID numbers---which is not their SS numbers, thank goodness. And when I look up the information on the site, my childrens' names & ID numbers are there---I just logged in & checked that to be sure. Each child's name has their student ID number next to it. I would've thrown a fit if they used SS numbers!

So if your school is using SS to identify your child to the Mealpay system, then it stands to reason that Mealpay will have the SS number as opposed to a student ID number.

I think it's time to step it up a notch & call your school board. The principal seems to be sending canned responses which aren't helpful.

They are double checking to make sure my daughters' information is not with this company. It probably isn't since I didn't complete the registration process.

They are also checking with their software company to see about changing the numbers.

I am glad they are taking my concern seriously.

I live in an area where alot of kids are illegal, and yet, our schools use Social Security Numbers. So the illegal kids have to apply for an ITIN (I think those are the letters), a Taxpayer Identification Number. Somehow they can get one without disclosing their legal status. I know, because theoretically this ITIN is supposed to allow illegal immigrants to pay taxes and file their yearly income tax (although even though I did income taxes for lots and lots of people this year, none had that ITIN).

While I know colleges are doing it this way, I am praying it will be changed by the time my DDs get there. Hopefully there is someone that takes a stand on this and gets some laws in place to protect our kids.

Not the college I work at. Each student is assigned a 6 digit id number that is in no way related to their social security number.

The social security numbers are part of their permanent record but aren't used for identification purposes.

my alma mater still uses ssns as the student id number, but you can request it be changed to a random 9 digit number if you would prefer.

its fighting a losing battle it seems all schools & other businesses as well use your ssn for basic identification, its disturbing. my h.s. & college were like that too.

my college just did this..i was very happy when i saw that change!

I don't know about all the colleges in Florida, but UCF doesn't use your SS #. They assign you an ID number from the get go and this is the number you will use for the time you attend there.
They can always cross referance your SS# but for safety precautions, the ID number is what is used freely.

I cringe now thinking about how all my scores were posted when I was in college. The professor would just tape up a sheet of paper outside the classroom that had social security numbers and scores on it.

With the amount of fraud and identity theft out there now I just have one question for companies who DO use SS numbers for our ID.
