School Uniforms: Your Viewpoint

Are you trying to get me points? *wrings hands*

And shouldn't it be "Oxfordcircus's"? :)

Well Mr. Smartypants, it actually depends on the authority that you consult. Most style guides for newspapers and publishing would lop off the second "s" -- it saves ink and space. Fowler's Modern Usage would have us add the second "s." I chose to eliminate the second "s" because of the alliterative "s" sound in your name. You would also eliminate the "s" if you put "signtaure" before "avatars." The three-s sound is so hard on the ear. Families, individuals, institutions, etc. all have the right to establish the proper spelling and punctuation for the possessive form of their name. Now that we know what your preference is, sir, we will all do our best to abide by your wishes.

:teacher:

We now return you to our regularly scheduled debate.

See, I always tell my little girl that she shouldn't stick her lip out because a bird will poop on it!!

My son learned this song last year in kindergarten:

The Poochy Lip will get you if you don't watch out!
The Poochy Lip will get you if you start to pout!
So take this little tip,
Withdraw that lower lip,
and chase away the Poochy Lip disease!

It's a lot cuter when he sings it.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I bet!

I am thinking about changing my user name. :rotfl:

Why has no one brought up the obvious answer? Just get rid of clothing entirely, we won't have to have this debate anymore.
:confused3

Hey I already said that on page 15 post # 214

I say bag clothes all together and everyone walk around naked.....at least then they all came from the same "mall" so to speak

I think the kid is wearing a uniform. I don't think his hair is up to uniform standards though.
Is that the communication tribal dance he's doing?

Yeah, someone told me you beat me to the punch. Great minds and all ya know.

But you know darn well some jerk would complain that not all the uniforms were the same color :scared:

That could be taken care of too.

"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society." -- Mark Twain

Naked women on the other hand...

Just for the record, I'm a teacher, and if my principal were to announce tomorrow that we teachers were going to be required to wear uniforms, I would jump for joy! It'd cost less than having a whole wardrobe of work clothes, and it'd be one less thing to deal with in the morning. Just give me the choice of a pair of pants and a skirt or jumper in school colors and matching shirts in long/short sleeves, and I'll be a happy camper.

That kid in your signature needs a uniform.

She's just excited because she's getting to express her "inner flower" by wearing her favorite dollar store daisy print shirt.

Back to the possessive form of a proper naming ending in 's' (:upsidedow ) - I consulted Strunk and White and they say to drop the possessive s only with "ancient proper names" and the example they use is Jesus!

Robert Burns's poems, but oxfordcircus' posts!

Now geezers, let's all play nicely and stop picking on Ariel, or I'm going to send you all to time out.

MTE Andy.

It goes both ways Ariel Mae. Your absolutes are not necessarily (thank goodness) mine, nor are mine yours.

But you quite often post along the lines of "I'm right, you're wrong, end of discussion", which is most assuredly not the case on a PUBLIC, internet message board.

If she didn't want anyones viewpoints than why did she ask them in the title of this thread?

I feel like she asked for viewpoints to tell those with viewpoints that they are wrong!:sad2:
