A company close to Charlotte recently laid off over 6,000 employees and a local organization (to them) is taking up donations of school supplies for the workers children. Anyway, someone from my area will be delivering the supplies that were delivered to local churches to the organization tomorrow. But I thought that the employees where I work could all go in and buy even more supplies for these kids. Even if we could get each person to give $2 we could buy tons of stuff for these kids.

Tonight I was at Target and they had pencils, erasers and notebooks at a great price. So I bought up several bags of those as well as a few packs of crayons. But here is my question: Is there something that these kids might need more than the items I have purchased already that will also be on the cheap side? We have decided to go in the morning to pick up more items. I want to get the most for our money, but I want to get what is needed too. I don't want to sound like I'm being cheap or anything, but I do want to get the most for the money.

I was thinking we could get a few packs of pens for the older kids and some folders (which I couldn't find tonight - they might be sold out). We will definitely get more paper, pencils and erasers.

Just looking for suggestions from you guys. Thanks!

I think the items you have now sound great... some other suggestions I would make.....

Rulers
Small bottles of glue
markers
colored pencils
red pens (for correcting)
Protractors
Compasses
Assignment books

You are definitely on the right track! :)

Here's some ideas. The schools in this area have supply lists in the front of Walmart for parents to see what they need. I think it's great you're wanting to help these kids out.:)

My ds's 2nd grade supply list:
1 plastic folder with 2 pockets and prongs
pocket folders with prongs (red, blue, yellow, orange, green, one of each)
4 packs of regular notebook paper
2 dozen plain yellow pencils
kleenex tissues
liquid soap or hand sanitizer
zip lock baggies (any size)
1 medium bottle of Elmer's School glue
crayola crayons (24 count)
clorox clean up wipes (fresh scent)
pink pearl (chuch eraser)
1 composition notebook (black and white marbled cover)
1 rubbermaid shoe box

My dd's 5th grade supply list:

10 3-prong 2 pocket folders
#2 pencils
1 pack colored pencils
wide rule paper
1 box of kleenex
1 box of gallon ziplock bags
1 bottle of hand sanitizer
1 protractor
1 compass

My son is entering 2nd grade & his school supply list includes:

Crayons
Scissors (Fiskars Blunt Edge)
Bottled Glue (I always get the WASHABLE kind)
Glue Sticks
School Bag
Markers (again WASHABLE)
Gym Shoes
70 Page Spiral Notebook
Pencil Box ( no larger than a cigar box)
Pocket Folders
Kleenex (son goes to private school so we have to provide this)
Paper Towel (same excuse as above)
Pump Hand Soap (same blah, blah, blah...)
Wet Wipes (1 container)
Pink Pearl Erasers (?)
Colored Pencils
Pencil Sharpener
Highlighters (fine point & thick)
3 x 5 index cards (500)
Box to hold 3 x 5 index cards

Hope that helps & that's a very nice thing you're doing.

Markers, glue and glue sticks, rulers, protractors, index cards, scissors, spiral notebooks, speckled notebooks, looseleaf paper, pens and pencils, binders, notebook dividers, book covers, folders, calculators (although these can be very pricey), pocket dictionary, supply boxes, highlighters. This is stuff I always have to get for my kids.

Hi fellow North Carolinian,

What a wonderful thing for you to do! The closing of Pillowtex has really hit our community hard. It's so many people, many of them with few skills other than textiles, and no comparable jobs available.

Sadly, I think the bankruptcy of this particular company shows just how totally beaten down the textile industry in this country is. There probably are very few of us on this board that doesn't own a product made by this company, whether it's Cannon sheets or Royal Velvet towels or products made under another company's name, such as Lands End. When we moved here 16 years ago, there were like 20,000 employees and the number has gradually dwindled since. And this is not just one plant closing but the entire company.

BTW, I love your area of the state -- have family in Montreat and Asheville.

Thanks for all of the info. Sorry I didn't get to respond back to you sooner.

We asked each person here yesterday to give $2 each so we planned on getting abuot $40 in supplies. We had $73!!!!! Our buggy was FULL!!!!!

Thanks for listing all of these items because I had not even thought about some of them until you suggested them. We counldn't buy them all, but we did get lots!

tar heel - this is for the Pillowtex ex-employees. I work at a radio station in Black Mtn. (your family problaby knows exactly where it is) that was keeping a list of churches that were collection sites for these items. I would LOVE to see someone come in and buy that place and put all of those people back to work. It is getting bad.

Next time you're up this way stop by for a visit!!!!

Looks like you have it all under control. I just wanted to say that I think this is a wonderful thing you organized. I tip my hat to you.:D

Michelle I am so proud to call you my friend !!!

I do this every year for our local battered womans shelter. I give supplies when Target runs that big sale every year. I also used to ask them about socks and shoes for the kids and I would run out and buy up all I could. Now I just buy gift cards for Payless shoes and Target through out the year and give those . That way the kids will feel like they are really getign something for themself.

Wishing everyone a tagged night
