My son has to get- DTaP (or DTP), Polio, MMR, Hepatitis B- which of these are combined. He is entering KG so he needs these and hates shots. Just curious what to prepare him for. He and daughter will also get the Chicken pox shot that is now required in IN.

I don't know that there is much you can do to prepare him ahead of time, but one thing I suggest is to give him a dose of Motrin/Advil/Tylenol or something about an hour before he's due to get the shots. It really helps a lot. In our pediatricians office, they always give a dose before they give the shot, but it's not kicked in by the time the shots are given.

as long as he knows what to expect it does make it better. People fear the unexpected.

I never let my daughters ped give her more than one shot at a time and no combo deals...we went every month for over a year for her to get her shots....worked out well for us. Going into Kindergarten here most all kids are not even due for anymore shots for another 2 years. I guess everyplace has their own shot schedual.

I live in just about the same neck of the woods as april gail. That is sure alot of shots at once. Ours says as long as they get a letter saying they are in the proccess of getting the shots, that is even o.k. I also could only give our one ds the dt and not p as he got convulsions from that. I admit I bribe our kids. I do not lie and I tell them it will hurt and then we are going to the toy store etc. I set a dollar limit etc. A lollipop from the dr. helps too. Maybe 2 if they get more than 1 shot. Good luck. And this too shall pass...:D

That is the shot that I made them not give with others too....I have 2 firends who's children had had that shot and had convulsions and one in his 20's functioning like a 5 year old and the other is at maybe a 3 year old level and he is 15. All shots given to her made me nervous.....but I also didn't give her peanut butter until one of her yearly exams and I gave her a peanut butter filled cracker in the Dr's waiting room so in case she was allergic we were right near someone who could help LOL!!!!

To enter KG, DS had to have 5 shots. We went 3X for shots
so he never had to get more than 2 at once. I felt better about
the possibility of reaction and he felt better about not so many
shots. I let him decide. Our peds office has a shot clinic weekly.

I always gave my kids a dose of Tylenol before shots too. Mine are good for shots until they are 12, thank goodness.

Another thing that I always did was be truthful with my kids. When my oldest was younger he asked this doctor if the shot would hurt, and the doctor said "no, not at all". I quickly told my child that yes, it would hurt, but only for a minute. I sure would not have wanted to be lied to and I am sure my kid didn't want to be either.

I only let them get 2 at a time.

We explain to them that they will hurt for a minute but that they need them to help prevent getting sick from something later.

The Varicella shot is now mandatory here in Michigan for all kids entering school.

DD had to get 2 the other day and I thought my heart was going to break but she was fine a few minutes later.

Good luck.

We call shots "pinches" in our house...because that's what they feel like...really hard pinches. I didn't want the kids to think beforehand that they wouldn't hurt but didn't want them to imagine terrible, terrible pain, either. Knock on wood, neither of them have had any reactions (physical or emotional) to any of their vaccinations! I, on the other hand, remember having to be held down by several people to get my shots...and I was old enough to know better!! Thank God my mom's wish that the favor of my behavior be returned upon me by my own children didn't come true...oh, goodnes!...what if they are saving it all up for adolescence?! Aaagh!

Keep in mind that pain is just as much a mental thing as it is a physical thing. When you or your child gets a shot (or any kind of pain for that matter) your sensory neurons send a signal to the brain and tell it to "feel" pain. Your brain then encodes that information and sends a signal back telling your body to feel the pain at that particular point (where the contact is happening). This is a part voluntary and part involuntary reaction. You can help control the voluntary part by distracting your child by talking to them or keeping them from "looking" at the shot being given. Always be honest with them beforehand about what is going to happen and what they will feel but distraction is the key. It has to be a form of distraction that occupies their brain at that particular moment. Showing them a cool picture in a magazine will not help because you don't know if they are concentrating on the picture or the pain they about to feel. I recommend talking. It fully involves their brain functions and WILL ease the situation. They are still going to feel pain but by the time they realize it has happened the pain will be gone. Thus they are not sitting there 'worrying' about when the needle is going to go in. The anxiety of thinking about it can actually make the pain worse because your brain is already focusing on the point of pain.

Ever found a bruise that you wondered how you got? We all have. It more than likely happened because you were not 'thinking' about getting a bruise or didn't actually do anything (such as slam your hand in a car door) that you could SEE as giving you the pain, thus your body really didn't even recognize that it happened.

I admit, this works much better the older you get, but it also helps with children. I also recommend letting them combine as many doses as they can. It keeps your child from having to get so many shots. Yes, reactions can happen - but a reaction is more than likely going to be from a particular drug and whether it's used in combination form or not really doesn't matter. If they are going to have a reaction - they will have it whether it's administered as a single dose or not.

Reactions are very uncommon but they DO happen. Just keep in mind that the chances your child will have a reaction are less than the chances he/she will acquire the disease you are vaccinating them from later in life.

This is what I do too. I gave advil/motrin before and then when they could have another dose..I gave it to them.

I also would not lie and tell them it won't hurt. When my godson was 2 he had cancer and was in and out for treatment, everytime he would ask if something was going to hurt and we would tell him on a scale of 1-10 how bad it would hurt this time. He was prepared and handled it well that way for 12 years! I do the same with my daughter, I won't lie and tell her it won't hurt. She really hates throat cultures and one time the assistant came in to do it and was hiding it behind her back and told my daughter to open up she just wanted to see her throat, I jumped in and stopped that right there!! I told her that I would rather Kasey was prepared for what was going to happen than sneak up on her like that!! Even with medicine, I taste it first when she asks if it is "yukky"...one smelled like cat urine and tasted as bad as it smelled, I went back to the Dr and asked to switch the medicine, I couldn't see her taking that for 10 days when it made me want to puke after a taste!!

Most people don't know that they can get an exemption from shots...

I think it's good advice not to give combo-deals on the shots... jmho.

Here's the other side of the mainstream coin:

Vaccination Exemption
Religious exemptions from vaccines are acceptable in most U.S. states

btw my 9 y.o. son has had all his shots except the chicken pox vaccine.

Sounds like he is behind with shots.

As for combining them, they can combine the DTaP and Hib = TriHib

I also believe they can switch that and do Hib and Hep B = Comvax.

So, with what you are saying he needs....it'll be at least 3 shots and I would do them all at the same time. My 5yr old doesn't like shots, but he is good about them. They went at him at the same time on both legs to complete 2. He had the MMR shot previously.

He's going into K this year too.

DS has to get a shot when he goes for his yearly next wk
There are certain ones they need to enter 7th grd. He's up to date on all but one.
