I will be taking my DD4 out of school in December for a week to go to WDW. She is Autistic (high-functioning) and in a full-day, 5 days/week early intervention school. I would love some ideas for a project we could work on during our vacation that would incorporate letters, numbers, basic pre-school skills that we could bring back to her teacher and class when we get home. Maybe a scapbook of some kind that she could share with her class? I am drawing a blank as to specific ideas for it, though, so I thought I would pick your brains!

Thanks for any ideas you guys share!

How about an A to Z scrapbook? Each letter of the alphabet gets a page. I'm already thinking of ways of fudging the hard letters, like "an eXcellent adventure" with photos of the Jungle Cruise or Animal Kingdom.

I'm planning to do an ABC scrapbook with my DD4, too, when we go in late November. I've started making a list of things that start with each letter so that we'll have some ideas as to what we need to take pictures of.

If you want, I can post my tentative list. And maybe we can help each other brainstorm ideas for some of the harder letters

By the way, for the letter X, I got the suggestion somewhere that the ride vehicle in the Buzz Lightyear ride is XP-37! Supposedly, there's a large magna-doodle "drawing at the end of the queue that says that and it's on the side of the vehicle, too.

These are all great ideas..I was going to post a similar question as I'm pulling DS out of kindergarten for a week in December and have been going crazy trying to think up things he can do to show his teacher/classmates when we get back...

Hmmm...of course, I still have to TELL her that I'm pulling him out...:confused3 I guess that if she has a problem with it I could send him to school with a sleeping bag and suitcase and have him tell her that he's staying with her for a week!!

THAT would scare her!!! :scared:

One other idea I just had is to do a Numbers scrapbook. For example, 7 could have the 7 dwarves, 2 could have 2 beds in one resort room, 3 could be Donald's nephews, etc.

I'm also toying with the idea of creating our own "passport" for Epcot's World Showcase (instead of buying the one that is sold at Epcot) DD is probably too young to learn a lot of facts about the countries but I was thinking of creating pages for each country that would have the flag for each country, a picture that shows where each country is located in the world, maybe a few pictures of things that each country is famous for and then including a few pictures of the buildings/signs in each country's pavilion and having DD see if she can find those places when we're at each pavilion. It might make her a little more interested in touring the pavilions.

My DD is really into reading and writing right now (even though she can't really do much of either, other than the alphabet and a few really simple words) so I may also leave space in her ABC scrapbook for her to write down the actual words themselves next to the pictures. And I'll try to take pictures of the actual signs that have the names we're looking for so she can learn to "read" those signs.

I'm really leaning towards bringing this little photo printer we have with us on the trip so that we can print the pictures out right away and work on the scrapbook during the trip.....but I don't know if we have the room for it in our luggage. I'm just afraid that by the time we get home from the trip, our "real" lives and the holiday season will catch up to us (we're going to WDW in late November) and we won't have time to put together the scrapbook after we're home. I'll guess I'll have to see if I can somehow fit the printer in.......

I haven't told DD's teacher yet about our trip but since it's only pre-kindergarten and my DD has already learned in preschool last year almost everything they're supposed to be teaching the class this year (she was in a private preschool last year vs a public elementary school this year) and the fact that the assistant teacher told us that, in past years, some parents have taken their kids out of school for weeks at a time to visit their home countries (we have a lot of immigrants in our neighborhood), I'm not too worried about the teacher's response.

I love these ideas! Now I have to start making list of what we can find for each letter so that I can "guide" her scavenger hunt. We have a lot of character meals planned...I could get Pluto's picture and have him autograph the "P" page, too. I wish I had one of the small printers. It would be great to take a glue stick & work on it in the evenings since the parks close earlier in December.
Great ideas everyone!
I haven't told the school yet either, but if they'd like to try to take DD to WDW during the summer in the heat & crowds with her sensory issues, they can give it a try! :) WDW really brings out the best in her (her speech was jump-started last time we were there!) & nothing could keep me form taking her whenever I want to!

Here's my tentative list. Now, I can't take credit for most of the words. I've been gradually accumulating them from all sorts of websites...and I also found a trip report where an adult was trying to do an ABC album so I jotted down a lot of her words, too.

I'd love to find more words for any letter where I only have 1-2 words, especially the ones where it requires me to go to a certain resort (i.e., Pop Century) to find the picture....because I don't know if we'll have time to visit the other resorts (we'll be staying at Coronado Springs)

airplane, Animal Kingdom, Aladdin, Ariel, Alice in Wonderland

Buzz Lightyear, Bug's Life, Bambi, Beauty & the Beast, Belle, Bashful (dwarf), Boma, Bruce (shark), Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Boneyard

the ride vehicle in Buzz is the XP-37 space cruiser! There’s a large magna-doodle “drawing” at the end of the queue, that proclaims that, and on the side of the vehicle it says it as well.

Buzz ride (Evil Emperor Zurg), Zawadi Marketplace

Wow you people are awesome! For my DD who is in 1st grade, I think I'm going to get her to write a short journal page for every day using words she knows how to spell. This is all too much fun! Even the "homework" is fun!

LOL!

I've printed out the adults and kids journal pages from the Mouse for Less website for both myself and DD to fill out (as well as the other mom and daughter that will be coming with us, the daughter is 5) but since my DD doesn't know how to write yet, I'll probably just have her dictate her thoughts to me and maybe draw some pictures.

If any of you are interested, here are the links to the adult and kid journal pages:

Thank you so much for the ABC lists! The journals are so cute, too! What great ideas everyone has! I'm still trying to find a small printer I can borrow for the trip...no luck so far. Does anyone know if there is somewhere at WDW where you can take your camera's memory card & get prints right away?
