DD's middle school is going to put on a production of Schoolhouse Rock Live, and all the kids are really bummed about it, they think it is too baby-ish.

The play at this middle school is a super-big deal. The director will cast EVERYONE who tries out. The director is wonderful at what he does. Last year, they did Aladdin Jr. It was wonderful, the cast numbered about 150.

So - I'm curious - does anyone have any words of wisdom here that I can share with DD?

While I haven't seen this show I do know some of the music - you probably do too from our childhood on Sat. mornings - it will be great fun and they will love it! (I teach theatre at the college leve and have considered it for MY students!)

Yes, I am that old - I do remember some of it.

Is there a storyline to this play - or is it just songs?

My son was in this play his freshman year of high school (he's a junior now) and it was great!!! They preformed the play for all the grade schools in town and the kids LOVED it!!! They also did it for the community at night and it sold out every night!! It was the first time I knew my boy could sing!! It really is a good little play, very educational and funny too. She'll have a great time doing it!!

OK - is there a story to this play - or is it just songs?

Thanks!!!

When my son's school did the play, the main character was a student who didn't understand why school had to be so boring. They used the songs to show how learning can be fun.

My son was the conductor in Conjunction Junction and The Bill.

disneyjunkie - how many people were in your son's play? thanks

Maybe 15- 20 I'm not sure.

The play was 4 years ago.

All the kids that tried out were giving a part.

Well this should be interesting. The director usually has well over 100 kids in the play. Are most of the rolls singing ones? DD will not try out if most of the rolls are singing ones.

'School House Rock, Jr.' was my dd's first foray into theater!! It was great fun. She was 8 at the time, now almost 13. The basic premise was a teacher who didn't know what he was going to do about teaching on his first day in school. There were about 30 in the cast...some leads, as well as chorus positions. Lots of songs, some dancing. My dd remembers it quite fondly.
The funny thing is that she is audtioning for 'Aladdin Jr.' on Sat..hoping for the Genie or a narrator. Again, they will most likely cast about 30 or so.

The summer rec program (mostly jr. high kids) did this two years ago, a local middle school did it one year ago so its not babyish.

My son's school was new that year. There were only 60 students enrolled. That's why the cast was so small.

There were only a few kids that had solos. Most of them just sang the chorus and danced.

I don't think this show is babyish at all! Heck, a touring production of it played at my college and my friends and I all went to see it. It was hysterical!

Not babyish at all. DD has participated in drama camp for the last three years and that was her first show. I really liked it-maybe because I knew so many of the songs. I actually bought her the Schoolhouse Rock DVD when she was doing the play and she watched it and got familiar with the songs.
