My kids have made thier own lunches forever! FWIW, my kids are in 7th grade and 5th grade.
I haven't packed a lunch for them for YEARS! They have made their own lunches for as long as I can remember. They all have sandwiches, fruit, water, and one treat.
The lines for lunches are awful--and it tastes horrible. So many kids just throw it out. Plus the prices are high-- I think its about $2.50 per day for elementary and the middle and high school are higher. I think high school lunch is almost $5!
