We are looking at moving into a new school district next year at of state at our current school we never had transportation fees or enrollment fees

instructional materials fees:are 75.00 dollar per student
transportation fees are 200.00 I'm not sure if that per student or not.

Is this high or normal? I was shocked in our area we don;t have these types of fee.

In our district there are no school fees for elementary and no transportation fees...but we are the last state that doesn't have privatized bus systems. I feel that the fees for transportation will be coming because our illustrious leader (Governor Nikki Haley) wants to change our bus system!! :-(

I hate the fees. I was shocked, I didn't know a public school charged fees

Our school district (Prince william county, VA) does not charge these types of fees.

I know the school district where I grew up in So. Cal offers a bus pass for $481 per student--and there is a limit to how many people can buy bus passes...

The school district we used to live does not offer bus transportion except on a very limited basis--to student living on the local military base.

I've never paid any fees or transportation fees so I can't help. Our school tax takes care of all that. I've never heard of school fees for public schools.

our school district doesn't have privatized busing and we are a few thousand miles from you.

To the op: we don't have busing costs. And we don't have a set educational fee, but there are fees, such as an art fee when you start classes. Or lab fees in the middle school/high school classes.

No fees here for anything I had never heard of them until the Internet

We also do not have private buses

We don't have any type of instructional fees. Although, many "extras" are paid for by our very active PTO, and every family is highly encouraged to participate in fundraisers. There are usually fees for field trips (not usually more than $10) to cover buses and any admission fees.

We do have transportation fees for kids who take the bus. A roundtrip bus pass costs $312 per year. The price goes down for kids who only take the bus one way. They also have special fees for kids who take the bus from school to school for music and sports practice (after school).

I really didn't come in contact with the concept of school fees (ouside of field trips) until I had to start dealing with it in my job. I know it's apparently a big thing in Illinois. :confused3

Thats nuts- this is for public school? they would never be able to enforce that here- heck can't even get some people to pay their hot lunch bill if their kids charge hot lunch LOL.

That would fall under that crazy as heck category. That wouldn't fly where I live either.

I live in Southeastern part of VA. DD13 since 6th grade(now is in 8th) has had to pay 4 or 5.00 for her agenda book. If they take certain electives: Art, Chorus or shop, it's a couple dollars each semester. and a few dollars for sol work books. but it wasn't even 20..00 for everything.

For 275.00 someone better be giving me a mani-pedi, massage, eyebrow waxing,etc.lol. or roll out the red carpet and give me champagne every time I visit the school, lol. That is crazy.!

My state is definitely a "fee" paying public school state. Our registration fee for this school year was $60. Only 1 of DD's classes this year had an additional charge of $6 (the was for her Social Problems class - so not one where you would expect extra fees). Each activity (i.e. sport or club) is an extra $50 PER activity.

Well, I pay over $200 per child for my 4th and 7th grader and that does not include bussing. If I wanted them to take the bus it would be another $250 each. The HS student was $325. (this is in Illinois)

eta ~ of course there are still supplies every year and the HS student needs 10-12 books for English class each year. They "booknote" so it is not like they can be re-used either.

eta#2 ~ Our bus service is through the district. They own the busses and hire the drivers themselves. The high school district also has their own busses, but they are not in as bad of a budget crunch, so there is no separate fee. My HS student is a senior, and drives his own car (the parking pass did cost $120) and we did not get any break for not using the bus.

No, there are lot of states without privatized bus systems or bus fees, including North Carolina.

Our school district goes back and forth on a supply fee that's around $10. They eliminated it for a few years, then reinstated it because of the budget crunch. We paid it this year, but nothing happened if you didn't. We have fees for some classes. This semester, I $19 for an AP government workbook and something (maybe $10) for chorus. Oddly, there was not a fee for AP chemistry.

I had no idea some public schools charged large registration fees or contracted out bus service until I started reading the DIS.

My son's school has a $100 materials fee and requires 36 volunteer hours per student. It's a charter school, though. The local middle school has a $40 materials fee.

Our schools don't charge much in the way of fees but our school taxes are fairly high. You might want to look at that too.

We don't pay fees, but our services were cut hard a few years back. The school board dropped bussing 6 years ago. There's not even an option for it anymore...everyone drives their kids or they walk.

Everyone pays fees for public schools, it's called property taxes. In some places taxes are so low that additional fees are tacked on. We pay about $8500 in property taxes so thank goodness no additional fees are added to that.

we have always had bookfees in Indiana. Even when I was a kid. It ranges from around $100 for grade school to over $200 for HS. Add the fees you pay for the extras like show choir and band and it really adds up.

Right now paying for the bus is in the court system.

Not everyone. In NC, all school systems are through the state. Although it is funded by taxes (obviously), there are no state property taxes. Property taxes are determined by counties, who may or may not throw a few pennies to the school system if they grovel enough. The state funds each district on a per pupil basis, which is why attendance is so important. The state takes the average of the number of students IN ATTENDANCE on days 1, 5, 10, and 20. That determines our funding for that school year.
