School districts punishing parents for taking kids out for Disney!

meandtheguys2 - I just removed my response to you as I'm not going to bother wasting my energy in responding to such ignorance. Not sure why you hate teachers so much - perhaps you didn't get accepted into teacher's college once upon a time?

Tiger :(

Didn't read it. I don't hate teachers at all. Some of my favorite people are. But I don't agree with any group playing the martyr game. Especially not such a privileged group. Teaching is a great job, with some hassles. Counseling is the same. I've spent thousands of hours in the school system as a consultant. I've heard too much whining and complaining. Yikes! I've worked with nurses, and police, also. None of them touch teachers in the whining category.

As far as teachers college, well, I don't think they would want me as a student any more than I would want them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl: Now, I get to supervise little teacherlings!!!!!!!!!! And you can bet they know exactly what I think of teachers pretending to be psychologist, and complaining about the pros of a profession they willingly are going into!

System by system. In the system my kids attend, due to high stakes testing, they are encouraged to retain students that aren't ready. Also, counting change back takes all of 15 minutes to teach. That's all it took for me to teach that to my 2nd grader.....

"Counting money" was one example of the many basics that are being overlooked. It took us a little longer than 15 minutes to teach our oldest to count back change, so, maybe you should make a career change!!! If it is so easy to learn, 12th graders should have no problem. Janice

A school is an enterprise that runs like anything else--on money. Teachers and principals and custodians don't work for free (nor should they). Schools have utility costs just like households. All of that takes money.[/QUote

I'm aware that school is an enterprise that runs on money. I never said that teachers should work for free. I believe I stood up for the teachers. My point was that teachers should have the right to hold back students not ready for the next grade. Money should play no part in that. IF your systems does it correctly, hats off to them, other schools should take notice. Money should not be the deciding factor in a childs ability to read!!!!!!!!!ENTERPRISE OR NOT. Janice

The little teacherlings?????

Unbelievable.

And what is that last paragraph about? Complaining about the pros of teaching? What does that mean?

Well now I guess we're even. I have the same attitude towards "education consultants" who walk into my building or classroom and try to tell me how to do my job. I'm so glad to know that you are so contempteous of the people you are supervising. :sad2:

And by the way, I went to the University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, and NYU for my graduate work - the same "colleges" as my friends who are drs and lawyers - although they do speak very slowly and use one syllable words when I'm around since I am a teacher.

Sorry, my tax money already pays for schools, teachers, etc.

This will be the third time I've pulled my kids out of preschool for Disney. I pay almost a 1000.00 a year for preschool already, not including my tax dollars.

Did you mean 10,000 dollars or did you mean 1,000.00 as stated? $1,000 is very cheap for a year of preschool!

Your tax dollars are going to preschool? Wow. I had to pay throught he nose for preschool and no tax money went to the center at all.

Wow! You are supervising teachers or "teacherlings" (how offensive!) - what is your job? I can't wait to hear what it is that you do for a living. There is no way I would have someone with your attitude supervising anyone, least of all a group of people whom you obviously have no respect for. Very sad that someone like you is supervising teachers - hopefully you don't come into contact with any students with this nasty attitude. By the way, many of us (especially those of us in at-risk schools) don't try and play "psychologist" - we have 1 psychologist in our entire board. Yup, that's right. Seriously high percentage of at-risk, mentally and physically challenged kids, yet 1 psychologist and only a handful of social workers. We are very underserviced and do the best we can for our 'kids.'

By the way, the old: "I don't hate...Some of my best friends are..." statement is pretty telling of what you truly think of teachers and I dare say it's pretty telling of what type of person you are as well.

Tiger :headache:

It is amazing to me how post can become so heated. The teachers are not the ones who made the rule for the money, so why is everyone dogging on them? I believe that teachers, for the most part, are people that have something special that the rest of us don't have. I love my kids and I even sub at school and go in whenever I can, but I could never do it full time and if I did, I might not have had kids.

What the original poster was talking about was the stupid rule of charging money for missing school. I would much rather have that then what they have here in GA. You have to go and see a judge if you miss a certain amount of school. Please give me the money!

Everyone needs to stop bashing the teachers. I just don't get it. I don't agree with my kids teachers all the time and I am sure in the future I will get a teacher I can not stand, but they are there for your kids more then most parents are. It is so easy to stand back and bash these teachers but until you do it for years, you really don't have a leg to stand on.

1000.00 in a public school district. Tax dollars do go to the "low income" preschool though within the school district.

This is for 2 and 3 half days a week from Sept - May.

The $36.00 a day may not seem to bad to a mother here in Michigan who was just sentenced to 90 days in jail because her son had missed 30 days of school. Apparently the middle school child had missed more than 300 days since kindergarten, but I still think it is unbelievable that they put someone in jail for it..Granted Social Services should be involved and reviewing if this child's home is appropriate, but I feel that this can become a very slippery slope now that the schools can threaten jail time...

Hazel Park.

I cannot find a link for the most recent case, but here is a link from last year regarding the Hazel Park's policies.

This reads like a case of neglect and a parent who doesn't give a Pluto Poop about her childrens education.
This doesn't read like a I take my children on family vacations situation. Therefore I think it has not merit in this discussion.
Missing school for lice is becoming a thing of the past and many school districts are change policy so children do attend school even with head lice, because it is not a health risk, just a irritant to the child (so sad the news report the other day).

Truancy has been a crime for quite some time. The first truancy law in the U.S. was passed in 1853. A kid who misses 30 days of school has missed 1/6 of the school year. That is not a minor issue. A middle school kid who has missed 300 school days in his career, has missed almost 2 yrs of education.

How about the days that the teachers are out for vacations or other 'non-medical' issues? My dd has had a sub for 2 weeks now, and the teacher left worksheets....etc for the class for that time frame. How much is this costing my daughter on the end of the year testing? She's doing grunt work while the teacher is away, not learning anything new or challenging....etc, since the sub wouldn't be able to actually 'teach' the lessons. So should the school system pay me?

We're homeschooling next year so my headaches with public school are finally going to be over!!! YAY!

Do you know why the teacher is out? The district I worked for would never have allowed this unless there was a valid reason.....taking care of a sick relative would be a reason for example.

We are homeschoolers and have been for 4 years. I am not sure we will do it forever, but for now we are.
