School District thinking about changing Easter Break to March?

Just wondering if anyone else's school district is considering changing their Spring Break/Easter break from coinciding with the actual holiday to March. Easter comes so late this year (or so our school district thinks), they are considering moving the break to mid-March. I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this? Because if not, we will definitely be going then and not waiting until the first week of May and having to take the kids out of school for a week.

And what is the weather like in mid-March? Is it even worth it to add the Plus Options for the water parks??

Melanie,
Our school district in IL is doing the same thing with spring break. They decided to set it at the last week of March permanently instead of at Easter. There explaination was that then it makes it easier for families to plan going away during the spring if they know it falls the same week each year. Instead of changing each year. In my opinion, I don't care how they do it. The only bad thing with this new way is that now they give the kids Good Friday and the day after easter Sunday off which makes it so we have to go a day longer at the end of the school year. The poor kids get to go back to school the Tuesday after Memorial day for an hour which stinks if you ask me. Anyway, about the weather in March for swimming;you should be fine since the pools are heated and it should still be warm during the day. If you are worried don't buy the plus option till you get there. You can always add it on at anytime during your stay for the standard $45 per ticket. You can also add days if you need to.

YOU WILL LOVE MARCH SPRING BREAKS!!!!!

Crowds everywhere (not just WDW) are less. Also, folks are free to celebrate Easter in their own church instead of always being on vacation. (My BIL's family always travels for Easter week spring break. Although they normally go to church every Sunday, I don't think their kids have ever been at church on Easter Sunday!)

Our school district was always closed the week before Easter for Spring Break, but they moved it to mid-March instead for next year. I just noticed on the calendar a 4/17 "April Break" and I'm confused about that. I don't think a public school should be closed on Good Friday or the day after Easter myself.

I think nearly all schools in TX have our spring breaks in March. We've went to WDW in '02 & '04 during the 2nd week of March and both years the weather was beautiful. We wore shorts and swam daily. It can be hit or miss though and I believe this year it was cool and rainy. We'll be there the 2nd week again in '06 and hoping for more of that fantastic Florida weather!!

Our spring breaks have always been in March (they don't care when Easter is-we get good Friday and Easter Monday then).

Our Spring Break is always the last week in March, no matter where Easter falls. This year Easter happened to fall on the Sunday before the break and I didn't like it, because we had to wait until Mon to go on vacation, so we could be home for Easter (DH wasnt going on vacation with us). And we don't have any days off around Easter. But with so many switching to this, wont that make the crowds more in March in WDW?

Wow, I'm so glad to hear that! Being from Texas also, we get break in March, but we've always avoided WDW then because we keep hearing about the "huge spring break crowds". And since we think of "spring break" as March, we figured it was too crowded. Great weather would make me rethink.

I would love it if our school district did this. Everywhere you want to go at Easter, not just WDW, is so expensive. March is still the high season in warm weather spots, but at least it wouldn't be quite as bad as Easter week.

We went during the second week of March in 2003 and it was very nice, mid-eighties every day.

Our "spring break" is traditionally the last week of March. Our schools changed it to the 2nd week in March for the upcoming school year. I was so happy to hear that. We went 2 years ago the week prior to Easter and it was busy. We're hoping with it being mid-March that it won't be so busy. ::MinnieMo

I'm getting a little worried here. Our spring break is always the second week in March (March 11-19 next year). We went to Disney in 2004 and while it was crowded, it wasn't too bad. And that was the spring break week for Orlando and will be again next year. But if more the East coast schools change from Easter to the second week of March, it may be much more crowded!

Oh well, we are going anyway. Have our plane tickets and DVC villas. I'll just need to stress the need to get up earlier and get to the parks before opening.

Robin,
The schools give off for Good Friday and the day after Easter because some families travel to be with extended family so they would just take their children out those days anyway and then the school would not get their tax dollars from the state for those kids that are absent. This way they just tack those days on to the begining or end of the school year figuring the kids will show up and they will get their tax money.

Our school in NH has never had an Easter break. We have a February vacation and an April vacation. The Feburary vacation has gotten a little later in the last couple of years. It used to be the third week in February and now it is the last couple days of Feb/first couple days of March. That is when we head to WDW. We usually miss most of the President's day crowds and the lines are easy to deal with.

In upstate NY we also get a February break (2nd or third week) and a April break (usually third week). If Easter falls close to April break they usually move the break so that we get Good Friday off and the following week off too... but usually it's just a three day weekend for Easter. Sometimes the kids get four days but teachers like me have to be at work on Monday for inservice.

Our Spring Break is always the first full week of April, regardless of when Easter falls. Even if it happens to be at Easter, they can't call it Easter week, just like they have to say "Winter Break" instead of Christmas break.

Most schools in Florida have Spring Break in March, just as colleges do. March is usually a pretty busy month at Disney.

Hi! We are from Ontario and we always have Spring break and Easter separate. Spring break is usually the 2nd week in March and a lot go to Disney that week. Those from Florida laugh at the Canadians that brave the waters. My friend and her family went this past March. It was cool and they were glad the kids brought wet suits with them

We get a small break around Mardi Gras ( in Feb) here in south Louisiana. Our spring break is Good Friday and then the following week . This year we will be WDW March 10th - 15th for the National ALL Star Cheerleading Championship. So be aware that the Values and CBR will be over flowing with cheerleaders and their familes! :cheer2:

I was thinking this early Spring Break was going to be a good thing! Now it seems that everyone is going early. Yikes! I have a Disneyland/Hawaii trip planned for the week of Spring Break and before.

Our Spring Break was always the Friday before Easter through the week after Easter, it didn't matter when Easter was. This past year Easter was early and for some reason they made it the week before Easter and the kids went back on Monday the day after.

I haven't looked yet for 2006, I hope it is in April.
