We had an ad in our community paper for part-time school cafeteria workers for the next school district over. That sounds perfect for me. My youngest dd just went to school full-time this year and I have been thinking of getting a part-time job. Just wondering if anyone has worked in a school cafeteria before and what kind of hours and pay I would be looking at. TIA!! :)

I'm in Canada but I work 8:30 -1pm--I'm in a high school and some of people arrive at 7:00--when I started 8 years ago I worked 10-2 which was perfect having school age children--they've grown up now so I can work longer hours--we have a good group and really enjoy ourselves-like the time off for school holidays as well--I must admit that the pay is lousy but if no daycare is involved it's ok.

I work 3.75 hours a day and LOVE my job. Every school district is different and even schools within that district. We are union so we get a few benefits included and decent pay. The job is very physical, lifting boxes, on your feet all day, etc.

We all just got fingerprinted (I think it is a new state law). EVERY state, city and school is different. Call, interview and see what they offer. You can not beat the hours, holidays and summers off. It is a PERFECT job for a mom who wants to work during school hours.

Good luck!

I have been doing it as a sub for 4 years before I took a permanent position this year . My work hours are 9:45 to 2:30 , I am home when the kids are home , and in the summers I get to collect unemployment while we are on vacation. If they have a delay , I do too so it works out all around.
Paywise they could pay more but the benefits of being home with the kids outweight anything else. I would not hesitate to give it a try.

My mom works in the cafeteria of my old elementary school. She started there when my brother was still in high school and needed supervision and to be carted to and from sports practice. She's still there. She likes it for the most part, the benefits are AWESOME! and having summers off when we were younger was nice but now she doesn't like not getting paid all summer when there is no reason she can't work. I think they can be good jobs for moms. I'd consider it if I wanted to work a few hours once all my kids were in school

I am an asst manager in an elementary school and it is WONDERFUL to have the same days off as my daughter. She is in high school but the same days off. We have been out since last Thursday and return next Monday. I work from 7-1:30. We have a lady that works from 9-1:30. She is retired from the school system so these hours are perfect for her. I love being with the kids everyday and you soon have your favorites. The pay is good and benefits are great. They pay all our insurance. You get one annual day and one sick day per month. Try it part time and I'm sure you will want to go full time. I wouldn't trade it for anything!

My DSIL and 2 friends work for our schools cafeteria. The pay is min wage, the hours are 7-2PM with the same holidays as the kids. If they have teacher work days where the kids are off the cafe staff have to work too. I can't say about the benefits. The saying around here is that you work for the school for the convenience of the schedule and being off with your kids NOT the pay.
That said, I think the jobs are in demand.

In our system we are state employees. So we get all state employee benefits. I think starting pay is over 9.00 an hour. We only work when the children are in school except at the very beginning of school.

Thank you so much for all the positive responses. I am going to head over tomorrow and put my application in. Thanks again!!

LOL!! And here I AM!!!! :rotfl:

EVERY state and even county differs on the pay. The county I work in here in GA....the pay is crap!! However they do pro-rate our checks so if you are a permanent worker you still get paid during the summer and all school vacations. Substitutes and first year employees make minimum wage here and each year you get something like a 3% increase. Like I said though other places make much more than we do so don't get discouraged. You can probably do some research on the school system website and look up the pay scale for non-certified food service.

I began as a substitute (that is normal until they need a permanent person) in another county and worked there for 3 years. We moved to another county and since my dd would be zoned for it I switched and have been in this county since 2002. I moved up pretty quickly. I worked a year as a regular worker and then about 5 months as head cashier followed by about 6 months as assistant before becoming manager in January 2005.

For the most part I really do LOVE my job. It gets hot here and there is quite a bit of heavy lifting when stock comes in. Some schools have a man in the kitchen that does most of the lifting but we are not that lucky. The cases of canned good weighs over 60 pounds!!

The kids can be so funny at times and of course others can be a pain!! There always seems to be a few each year that become my "buddy" and I can always count on them giving me big hugs or telling me jokes, or all the good and even bad stuff going on it their lives. I even have one boy that loves reminding me when I am in need of a good "dye-job" on my hair!!! He just told me the other day it was time before he had to start calling me "old lady" so I guess this weekend I will have to take care of it for him!!! He is such the rascal!! LOL!!

This kind of job is ideal for anyone that has a small child. I work 6:30-2:30 each day. Mt assistant works 7-2:30 and most of my other ladies work 8-2:30. I have one that get off at 2:00 each day and my cashier comes in at 7:30. I have almost all the same days off as my dd does except for a few days of training, getting ready for a new school year, and closing up for the summer. My dd goes to the same school I work at now so she actually gets up early and goes in with me and naps in my office most morning!! In the afternoon I stay around until school gets out so I can let her ride with me in the afternoons.

I recommend very comfortable shoes!! The floors are hard to take at times!

Workers are responsible for cooking for hundreds of children and staff, cleaning up,making sure the foods are cooked to safe temperatures, etc.

I would recommend that you give it a try at least. If you have any other questions please ask!! Good luck.

Never knew there were so many of us on the board. LOL! :rotfl2: I'm a manager.

ITA with the other posters offered. You got some good advice and information! For me, it is just REALLY great to be working in the same school as my second grader and being able to be around for her on her days off.

I know its been kicked around here before, but you might want to check into the laws in your state regarding social security, especially if you qualify for full benefits from work done in the private sector and you might possibly find yourself in a position to retire from a school job where you are considered to be a state employee (which in most places includes cafeteria workers, bus drivers, janitors, etc). There's action being taken to correct this unjust situation, but as it stands right now, its best to be informed, particularly if you live in Texas, Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisianna, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio or Rhode Island.

I don't think this would affect those who just work for a school part time for a few years and quit, but I have seen too many people who leave the professional world to teach or hold other positions in school districts lose a large chunk of their social security benefits because they weren't aware of the ramifications.

Just something to be aware of...

I work in our school cafeteria also. It is alot of hard work, heavy lifting and standing on your feet all day but the benefits of getting to see your kids everyday and being off when they are off make it all worth it. Where I work we have a great bunch of women to work with. Everyone in our school system always say we have way too much fun in there. You also have the benefit of getting to know your kids friends a little better and that helps too. All in all it's a great job. We work from 6:30am-2:00 pm. The school pays our health insurance and living in a small town without many jobs, the pay is pretty good.
