Scholarships anyone?

Does anyone know where I can find any scholarhips for my children? I have scoured the internet to no avail. My children don't seem to fit into any categories.

Our local high school has some scholarships posted on their website. In addition - there is a "CITY-NAME" Area Scholarship, and there is one common application for many scholarships. What isn't widely known is that if you live in "CITY-NAME" you can apply for the scholarships - even if you do not attend the "CITY-NAME" high school (i.e. if you went to a parochial school or are home schooled.)

Also - the thing I would recommend is to look locally - there are many small scholarships (Lion's Club, Lioness Club etc) that do scholarships.

In my neck of the woods, there aren't many renewable scholarships, nor are there many opportunities for upperclassmen as opposed to incoming freshman. Frustrating for my DD, who is finishing up her sophomore year at colleges.

What year in HS is the student? Most scholarships cannot be applied for until senior year. We have found most through the guidance office of the high school.Not fans of some of the big "scholarship search" websites-many aren't true scholarships, and you have to wade through a lot. NEVER pay for a service to find you aid-you can do it on your own.
I have found a lot of good college information at College Confidential, even if it does seem like there are an abnormal amount of genius students,lol.

From experience, I can say that if your child is in middle school or early in HS, start being involved in extra-curricular activities, clubs and community service NOW. Good grades alone won't do it, and even average grade students can get good aid by being well rounded. That also goes for admissions to college. (One DD college grad, other senior in HS)
I know of kids that had very high GPAs and SAT/ACT scores and assumed they were shoo-ins for the most prestigious universities, and guess what? All but one rejected.

With oldest ds, we found that outside scholarships on the web are not as plentiful as you might think. And the ones out there are applied for by so many excellent applicants that chances of receiving them are slim.

Having said that, look for local scholarship opportunities at rotary clubs, exchange clubs, elks clubs, lions clubs, etc.

And the colleges your student is interested in. Ds received his scholarship directly from his university based on his resume of activities, grades and ACT scores.

Nordstroms has one.


Depending on where you live and your ethnic make up. RHHC has some as do many Mcdonald. Ethnic specific owner operators groups.

I only know those two because I proofed the neighbor kids essays last year for both.

She got Nordstroms I think it was 10k with annual renewal.

Start with whatever list your high school has complied. Watch the local paper for congratulatory announcements, keep track of those organizations. Check with your credit union, employer, etc. The Elks were very generous to our D, so check with Elks, Lions, Women's Clubs etc.

If your kids have have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award or Boy Scout Eagle, search for those (Gold Award Scholarships). If they have a hobby, try that. It can take some searching.
