Hi!

So I'm very interested in doing the ToT 10 miler in 2014. This is a long way away but I'm saving and planning for a 14 day trip where I can enjoy MNSSHP, F&W Festival and this run all in one trip. My question is should I schedule my trip with having the race be at the beginning, middle or end of this long vacation? What's been your experience? Has anyone else done a long trip that included a run?

I also plan on doing the DDP or DXDP depending on my budget. Hoping to get free dining but that will depend on what Disney offers next year :) should that factor into my decision?

I think the general advice is going to be to do the run at the beginning of the trip so you don't walk around the parks for a week and exhaust your feet and legs before the run.

However, it just depends on how avid a runner you are. If you're used to running a lot of miles weekly, walking around the parks isn't going to be much different. For some people, it's "only" a 10 mile run, while that is the longest distance that others have done.

I did the marathon in January - flew down Thursday night, did the expo and half a day at Hollywood Studios on Friday (not much, I had the flu), Saturday did Animal Kingdom all day, then Sunday did the marathon. About mile 16 my feet started to hurt - too much pavement in the prior days and during the marathon, I think. Then I vacationed until the Thursday after the marathon.

I think running at the beginning of a vacation would be easier than waiting until the end of one, after I've stuffed my face with Mickey bars, etc. :P

I have TOT scheduled at the beginning of our trip. This also allows me to use the timezone difference in my favor (and in DS's, so he can have fun at the villains party without it feeling THAT late to him).

In January I'll likely have been in Orlando for a week before the Half, but we have more time after that, so we'll keep the park stuff light. It'll only be my son and I, as well, during that first week or so, so it'll be really easy to be casual and breezy, and not hurting my legs.

I've run the marathon in different years on the last weekend of our stay and on the first weekend of our stay.

I far, far prefer running on the first weekend. My legs were fresher for the race and touring the parks in the days following the race actually helped me recover more quickly. Also, I was able to relax and enjoy the trip more -- and perhaps most importantly, I could eat and drink what I wanted!
