Love it when you mess up but get a good photo anyway! How spooky is this! It was during the parade. I didn't have my camera set yet. I don't think i could of got this "ghost" effect if i tried!:)

Cool! I love happy accidents.

I can tell you what it looks like you did, so you can try to do it again. It's all in the shutter speed. You were slow enough so that the people were just ghosts. I'm guessing that the people probably stopped for a moment at the places where they appear, that's why they're not just a streak. Were you using a tripod?

I have a Canon T2i, I was in the process of setting up my tripod (but we were late for the parade) so honestly I cannot remember if it was on yet or not.

4 sec, f/3.5, ISO 400.....yea, it was on the tripod:thumbsup2

That is an awesome picture! Even if you had everybody in the parade cooperate, that can be a difficult shot to get just right. Very nice!

ok, so I'm new to photography :) so it might be obvious but how do you tell it was on the tripod from the settings? so I know for the future :confused3
Thanks

You cannot handhold a 4-second shot without significant motion blur.

Brilliant!! Who needs the hitch hiking ghosts when you have this!! Love it!

Perfectly valid question. (short answer is at the bottom if you want to skip the boring stuff)

It's hard to hold still for longer than say 1/30th of a second for most people that haven't practiced doing so. 1/2 sec is tough but do-able if you have the right stance. A full second is nearly impossible. 4 seconds? I can't even picture a funny circumstance of how that would be funny. I guess maybe if there were an earthquake to counteract the natural shakiness of my hands :confused3

Honestly, as a good exercise, go out with a camera one night. Without using a flash, try to take a few pictures with your shutter open for a full second. Check the pictures out on your computer (not the camera) so you can really see the details.

After that, do the same thing using a tripod. If you don't have a tripod, set your timer so you can push the button and let it go before the shutter opens and set the camera on something stable. Take a few pictures and go compare the differences.

One last thing I thought was a fun learning experience. Go set the camera up again on something stable. Set the timer up to take a picture again for a whole second or two. This time go stand in the middle of the picture and pretend you are holding a camera. If you set the shutter to be open for at least a second, you'll see just how much your whole body moves without a proper stance.....it's not just your hands working against you!:thumbsup2

Short answer: Humans move too much

NatenLogansDad...great explanation! appreciate the detail! I get it! :cool1:
@Nancy...you are absolutely correct! LOL it wasn't the camera at all......spoooooky!

I should have inserted the disclaimer ahead of time.....I don't really know what I'm talking about most of the time :rotfl::rolleyes:
