Just read the news report about Disney being a possible target. We're going at the beginning of August. Just really flipped out about it!

We went to Paris in 2014 and stayed literally two blocks from where that horrific hostage scene happened last November. My husband and I literally walked right past the theater every day we were there where all of those people were killed. And now this in Orlando...it's just all hitting so close to home and it's terrifying.

I just truly hope that Disney amps up security in the wake of this past weekends tragic events!

Just read the news report about Disney being a possible target.

It's sensational journalism at it's worst. Spreading fear for page views. It sickens me.

Walking the streets of Paris, Driving, flying or taking a train to WDW, grocery shopping before your trip, going to the mall to get an outfit to wear at the parks, in a hotel, in your bedroom... You are facing the same risk you do at WDW. Why worry more about one place than another?

Disney will take all the security measures it possibly can. Usually when Disney does something they go overboard with there measures. I remember back with Y2K and all thos genators placed around the resorts and parks just in case. They will beef up security because what this world is fighting now warrants it. Go and have fun in the most magical place on earth and let them handle the rest.

I'm going in 11 days and feeling a little scared myself. More so because i'll be there by myself, but I'm just praying over our country and over everyone's upcoming vacations. I think there are a number of people afraid (myself included) and anxious about the "what if's." But i'm trying not to let fear steal my joy.

News flash. Disney parks have been considered a target since 9/11. I don't see any reason to be more scared today than 2 days ago, or 2 years ago.
That is true as is with any large venue since 9/11. As with anything though security that was beefed up shortly after 9/11 at WDW and other places like it have slacked off considerably over the time since then. I remember shortly after 9/11 they would really thoroughly looked through each individual bag and scanned you before entering. Now they barely scan the bags and I have gone through without a scan many times now. Yes that speeds up the process and that is all great until the first time someone gets away with entering the park with an explosive or something like that. Unfortunately this is what the world has gotten to where security measures are needed at just about everywhere and yes it may slow down the process and that sucks, but it could also save lives as well.

Slacked off? I don't think so. They've added metal detectors at every park entrance and increased police and dogs on property. Don't forget that Disney Security is like an iceberg. You on!y see a small part of it. And if you think the senior security people are just mall cops, think again.

Were they randomly screening through metal detectors post 9/11?

I feel safer at Disney than your average mall or what not. That being said I really think Disney springs needs some security protocol like metal detectors or whatever. Wouldn't be surprises if that's instituted at some point

Never said they are Mall Cops. I am talking about how they check the backs and the person before entering the park. It is a much quicker check of the bags as a of late as it was closer to the 9/11 tragedy and like I said there has been many times my person has not been checked at all. It is great that they have metal detectors at every park and increased police and dogs on property. WDW is a much larger place than just the parks. My main concern is pretty much the Disney Springs/Downtown area and the access to the Resorts. My point to the last post though was that closer to 9/11 they checked the bags much more thoroughly and also the person much more thoroughly than they do in recent years.

His wife said DS was another place he was scoping out, the key there is "his wife said" we have no way of knowing what he really had in mind. My honey has clients who work in a tower building in Atlanta that is in a series of other towers. Two of the towers were evacuated this afternoon because of a bomb threat. My point is, there really isn't anywhere that is totally safe, even your home can be broken into. Be aware and go, enjoy.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the park entrance metal detectors become 100%, instead if random. But DS is going to be a different kettle of fish. There are just too many points of entry, unless they put the whole place behind walls of razor wire.

I agree with this. The parks themselves are more of what would be considered a "hard" target due to restricted access and security. Thus I myself would feel safer in there (once inside) than at a mall, movie theater or a place like Disney Springs where as many on here have posted there is really no way to lock that down security and access wise without totally changing what it is.

Unfortunately in the world we are living in right now the possibility of one of these terrible events is always present. I feel that it is an individual choice as to how much one wants to forgo doing for an increase in safety, a choice each has to make for themselves. I myself will not let these horrible acts make me forgo all the good things out there to experience. I will be observant and careful but I will still go and do things.

I stayed in Paris and left two weeks before that event. As a personal experience, it doesn't matter if you were there two minutes before it happened as long as you weren't there when it did. When I was in Europe there was security presence everywhere. You couldn't go into anyplace without going through a metal detector. They were very visible and that is probably the way we have to be, at least of awhile.

What happened in Orlando, which BTW is 15 miles from WDW, is random. This involved two things, a sick mind and a hating mind. He targeted a specific group. A place like WDW would require the elimination of a number of people that he allegedly wasn't upset with, so, other then the fact that it is a public place, there is no real reason to actually target WDW. That doesn't mean that someone with an evil intent wouldn't do it, but, it would be, even if you were in the park, a slim chance of being hurt. The place is too big. Where does one start. Be cautious and watchful, but, don't just hide away over something that probably won't happen anyway. It can, but, that, like I said, that has been a possibility for many years.

You take as much of a chance getting there as being there. Many people seem to forget the hundreds of people killed by bombs on airplanes. Hundreds at a time. Much more carnage then this one was. That is not to say that this one wasn't horrific, of course it was, but, it isn't the biggest happening ever. Disney has known to be a possible target since before 9/11 so there is no more reason to worry about it now then there has been for years now. That is why they have increased security, added metal detectors and so on. Beside, do you really want to live your life in constant fear? I don't. We can't and we shouldn't alter our lives to be petrified of the idiots out there. That is what they wanted to do and we cannot allow them to get that satisfaction.

The news has speculated the he checked out WDW, I'm not sure I'm buying that. Even if he did, he made the decision that WDW was not the place to make his stand. How do they know, what they have is a dead body. Whether or not he seriously gave any thought to doing that is pure guessing. If anyone actually knew that was his intent and didn't report it... should be prosecuted as an accomplice.
