scanning via wifi -- do I need a new printer?

Here's the scenario. I hope I don't need a new printer! And I hope someone here will know the answer!

Our old desktop is basically dead, won't really start up, ugh. Our printer is attached but DH and I can print from have laptops too (through the router? Ha, I'm not ever sure LOL)

I need to scan some pictures and I normally would scan / save to the desktop. But since the desktop won't start, am I out of luck? Or is there a way to use the printer's scanner from our laptops?

Hope that makes sense? Anyone know?

I do it all the time, I use a program called Paperport that controls the scanner and a I have a Brother multifunction printer. There is probably a way to do it through the printer's program though.

Yes, the scanner is part of the printer, where I also make copies.

I have an HP Officejet 6500 but no idea where the info booklet would be. So is the Paperport a program that works with most / all printers?

As another thought, couldn't you hook the printer directly to your laptop if you needed to?

I misread the original post.

Just hook your laptop up to the printer/scanner and you'll be able to use it.

You should just be able to load the scanner software in your laptop and scan just fine.

I have a USB port on the front of my officejet... I can scan and save it directly to a jump drive in the USB port... that may work? good luck!

We have an HP all in one and we can scan and print wirelessly. You need the software that came with your printer installed onto your laptop and it will work just fine. If you can not find the software check out HP's website to see if you can download it from there. It does not matter how you are connected either through a router or if wifi is built into the printer. If it is working to print from your laptop than you can also scan. We have had a printer hooked up both ways and have always been able to print and scan with no problems so long as the software was installed for it.

Can you tell us what the model of the printer is? does the printer has a cable connected to the desktop? What kind of cable is it?

I suspected you may only need to download the software to your laptop so that you can scan. Given most of the manufacturers put their software online, you may be able to configure the same from you laptop.

I am not sure whether you need to move the usb cable, but I suspect it is not necessary.

I don't use a HP, my network printers are brother and lexmark, but if it were a network printer, you should be able to access the same function on any computer.

I think I know what you mean, I just got a new wireless printer. I could not for the life of me figure out how to scan wirelessly. I downloaded the correct software and everything and I finally found out that I could do it easily thru google's PICASA sofware, It's under the "import" section and I just choose the "twain" selection. (it shows my other scanners there as choices, but this one was new). It automatically opens up my printer software and plops the scan right into my Picasa. I can adjust the image and then click "finish" and that's it. I am pretty tech savy and I thought this would be easy.. it's not easy to figure out. good luck!

Thank you! For the Picassa idea and help! We've used Picasa for pics so hopefuly this will work, too! And thanks too for letting me know I'm not the only one confused!
Teen kids and DH might have been able to figure it out .... IF I could actually get them to try! Can you say busy busy busy?
