I am new to this board. What is the current rate of scammers for renting points? We certainly cannot blame the admins when there is a scam as there are a lot of steps the renter should take to protect himself or at least reduce the incidence of scams. I have seen some really questionable threads on the Rent Board. Maybe I am just overly cautious, but when a person posts that he/she has points for rent and then never responds on the thread to anyone who makes an inquiry, that makes me question them. I could be totally wrong though, and it could all be legit.

The rate is fairly low, but problems do happen. More often than not, issues arise not from scams but from something befalling owners renting out their points -- owner falls behind in MFs and their account is frozen/reservations cancelled, for example.

Do your homework. Ask for references from owners, check for their name on the Orange County Comptroller site (if they own at one of the resorts listed on there) and trust your gut. If a "deal" feels too good to be true, it probably is.

I see a lot of "owners" on the rent/trade board who have very few posts or activities on their profile, which does worry me.

I was looking to find a transfer....

IMO, the current rate of scammers renting points here on the DIS is VERY low. You're right to be cautious as this transaction requires a lot of trust, but keep in mind that it's usually one bad apple that ruins things for everybody else. While some DVC owners may be better to rent from than others, I think the vast majority here have the best of intentions. Realizing that it certainly does not completely prevent a scammer, keep in mind that before an ad to rent points is placed on the board, it is reviewed by the DIS to ensure it has the required information and that the poster has at least a small history or they must pay to list the points.

Also, I would think nothing of the fact that someone lists points to rent and does not respond to inquiries with a public post. Much of that is done via private message/conversation behind the scenes. Some members will post that they sent the person inquiring a PM, but many, including myself, will not. Also, it could be that one of the initial inquiries rented all of the available points and the OP simply did not update the initial post to show it being "closed" and didn't bother to respond to additional inquiries.

I understand your concern, but I would have no worries about doing a transfer versus a rental since you'd have to do the transfer in conjunction with MS over the phone. MS will verify the points and once they are transferred into your account, the transaction is final. I've done this many times via a 3-way call with MS with me working out any remaining details with the owner after the points have been transferred.

Yes, than goodness I'm a dvc member. Getting a transfer provides less risk and more control!

I take transfers as well, but I have done a couple of rentals to cover the transfers. It is easier to obtain personal info about me because I carry a state license, but I worry about some of the threads on the Rent/Trade board. Oh well. Maybe that is just me being pessimistic.

I suspect most people respond through private message. Most posts request you contact them that way, since you'll need to exchange private information. There's not much point to responding publicly.

It's likely on those threads that people are using the conversation feature to respond. I do that because it is now working with that one person. I will try and respond to the thread too so others will know the points may be gone but I could see how some might forget or not think about it.

I think I would respond to the thread inquiries with a PM if I was listing points for rent, but no activity in your thread except the initial listing just looks bad to me. That's just my opinion though, and others may disagree. I think I would at least say, "sent a PM" or something just so people know I'm responding. Also, when someone notates that they sold out their points, that also shows an extra level of responsiveness to me. Again, just my personal opinion.

Those who are nervous about renting from a stranger may be more comfortable going through a broker who will escrow a potion of their money, and who will at least ensure they don't lose any money if things go awry with the reservation (the brokers' businesses depend heavily on reputation). No one can absolutely guarantee a DVC reservation will be there when they arrive - the owner retains the ability to cancel a reservation until check-in has occurred.

There is usually a price premium to go through a broker vs directlythrough an owner. Individual owners may have points available for 11 month bookings that the brokers do not. Lately, it seems the brokers have waitlists for renters who want to book certain resorts before the 7 month window opens. Individual owners may have more friendly cancellation procedures and may be more willing to work with the renter if changes are wanted. It is important to have a contract to make sure all the terms are understood before sending in your money to anyone.

The DIS has had very few reports (I can count on one hand and have fingers left over) of problems when the Disboards.com Rent/Trade Board has been used to bring owners and renters together. That said, it is still important to use common sense and do some checking. The pinned thread at the top of the Rent/Trade Board provides a very good guide. Keep in mind that while the DIS makes no representations or guarantees of a problem-free transaction, the odds of a successful transaction are very much in your favor if you use the R/T board as recommended in the pinned thread. That's especially true if the poster making the offer has a lot of posts on the DIS - you can get a very good idea of who that person is by reading his/her posts. Those regular posters also love to share their Disney experience with others and care about their DISboards reputation.

I would not be particularly concerned about the lack of replies to a particular offer. (Still need to do your due diligence, of course). As mentioned, many prefer to handle their business via email or telephone rather than PM. Sometimes, resort, price, timing or terms are an issue for prospective renters and the offer sits for awhile before someone responds. Neither would I be particularly concerned about the lack of posts if the poster has purchased one of the Rental Plans available to those who do not have enough post to have the fee waived. (There are still places on the internet where no fees are charged ir minimum number of posts required to post rental offers/requests and IMO, the potential to be scammed is much greater on those sites. YMMV).

My advice is to NEVER do business with someone who contacts you "out of the blue" via PM or email based on a post you made on the DIS. While those contacts may come from honest DVC owners, almost all of the problem transactions that I am aware of have come from transactions that did NOT go through the Rent/Trade Board. Much safer to do business via an offer thread on the R/T Board, than with someone who chooses to ignore / bypass DIS forum rules. If you choose to do business with someone who initially contacted you outside of the R/T forum, be very sure to check them out very carefully before you send money. Remember that if the price is "too good to be true" .............
