I have been reading through the South Beach thread and I must say you guys are very inspiring! I am thinking about trying it out. It sounds like something I may actually be able to do. (if some of you can fight off the carb cravings and sugar cravings I should be able to as well!)

I have a question though. We are running around so much lately trying to get wedding things done, that we really eat out a lot. We aren't home much in the evenings anymore. How is the SBD and eating out? Fast food, sit down restaurants? Especialy in the first phase since I"d be starting now.

I'd love any input you guys have!

Thanks so much
Lisa

Exactly one month till the wedding! April 17th

I actually find it easier to start by eating out MORE. I just started again this week and told DH we'll be eating out a lot! I find that it takes some of the pressure off while I figure out my menus and also helps me feel less deprived.

I like many of the salads at fast food places - especially the Wendys Chicken BLT. You can get any of the sandwiches at Subway done as a salad. At nicer restaurants it's pretty easy to eat fish or chicken with vegies and salad. I also get Hamburgers at restaurants with salad instead of fries and take off the bun.

If you are running around the hardest part will be making sure you have lots of snacks on hand so you don't get stuck somewhere ravenous. Celery, nuts, jerky, etc.

I find I can get lowcarb options pretty easily , though they do have more fat than I'd like sometimes.

Best wishes!

This is from "The Daily Dish" published on southbeachdiet.com:

What to eat at Burger King:
As with other fast food joints, it is possible to eat healthy at Burger King while avoiding the usual diet foes. That means no burgers, no French fries, no regular soda, and certainly no chicken nuggets. So what's left? If you find yourself unexpectedly holding court with the King, order one of the following:

BK Veggie Burger Sandwich with no bun and no ketchup
Chicken Whopper Sandwich with no bun
Chicken Whopper JR Sandwich with no bun
Chicken Caesar Salad without croutons
Side Garden Salad
Chili
Acceptable sauces and salad dressings:

Mayonnaise
Reduced-fat mayonnaise
Ranch dipping sauce
Kraft Ranch Salad Dressing
Signature Creamy Caesar Salad Dressing

Here is one for Subway:

Published 1/29/04) Whenever you go out to eat, be sure to apply the principles of The South Beach Diet to your food choices. Subway is an acceptable choice for people on the go as long as you stick to salads or a protein source with vegetables. You can choose from the following:

Ham
Roast Beef
Sliced Turkey Breast
Roasted Chicken Breast
Tuna Salad
Subway Seafood & Crab Salad
Then, feel free to add one or all of the following ingredients:

Vinegar
Mustard
Mayonnaise
Olive Oil Blend
Lettuce
Tomato
Onions
Cucumbers
Jalapeno Peppers
Banana Peppers
Subway recently started selling a line of Atkins-friendly wraps. If you're wondering how these might fit into The South Beach Diet plan, here's a rundown. The actual "wrap" that surrounds the sandwich fillings is South Beach Diet-friendly. However, be sure to read the ingredient list for the fillings themselves before indulging. Check the amount of saturated fat to be sure you don't overdo it. Remember that The South Beach Diet is not a low-carb diet—The South Beach Diet focuses on selecting the right carbs and the right fats.

And here is one for Wendy's. It doesn't say this specifically in the Daily Dish, but messages from some of the nutritionists say combining a side salad and bowl of chili from Wendy's is a South Beach Friendly lunch suggestion. Anyway:

Not all fast foods are to be avoided at all costs. In fact, many chains have added healthy alternatives to their menus. For the occasional fast-food fix at Wendy's, try one of their many salad options. With a few modifications, the following salads are an acceptable addition to the South Beach Diet.

Caesar Side Salad minus the bacon pieces and home-style garlic croutons
Chicken BLT hold the B. Skip the bacon pieces, garlic croutons, and honey mustard dressing
Spring Mix Salad with roasted almonds instead of the honey-roasted pecans-and leave off the house vinaigrette dressing
Side Salad (nothing bad here!)
For your salad dressing needs, choose one of the following:

Blue cheese
Creamy ranch
Reduced fat, creamy ranch
Caesar
