I remember hearing rumors about this and now it looks pretty official that Disney will be scrapping the famed (infamous?) auction scene in Walt's original PotC.

Looks like DLP will be changing first, then WDW and DL in 2018.

Another victim of PC culture or re-invigorating a ride just turned 50?

You know, "political correctness" is often another word for "let's stop being jerks".

So while I hope they can include "we wants the redhead" into the audio of it, I do admit it was getting pretty darned awkward to enjoy all of that ride when some of it involved auctioning off "wives" who either don't want to be auctioned OR are only doing it for money. if you don't have a curious kid who trusts you enough to ask lots of questions about the world, you don't know how uncomfortable it is for the current generation, watching that scene in the ride.

(of course then one has to get one's mind around a ride and also a movie franchise that's all about PIRATES, who were BAD guys and disgusting people in general, but that's a whole other conversation that the same curious kid doesn't like to get into because he likes Jack Sparrow LOL. He doesn't like me reminding him that Norrington and Beckett are the GOOD guys in the first and second movies respectively.)

In this drawing she looks like something out of the Wild West rather than a pirate. I hope they tweak the costume a bit, though I prefer the original redhead. Hopefully the pirates will still chant "We want the redhead"!

PotC is one of my favorite rides, but every time we get to this part, I cringe a little. I'm glad this is changing, just as I am glad they changed the woman hiding in the barrel and the pirates chasing the women around. Political correctness isn't always a bad thing.

I also hope that they find a way to keep the phrase in the ride and I'm confident they will. Imagineers seem to have a knack for making even the naysayers happy with whatever new and awesome changes are made (I'm looking at you, GOTG:Mission Breakout).

PotC is amazing and always will be. It's a fan-favorite and I don't foresee this change negatively impacting the ride.

I'd like to see them re-fix the chase scenes, because they're dumb now. Then make the burning town a little more precarious too.

PC is probably one of the reasons for the change.

However, I'm sure Disney is also seeing the dollar signs.
- There will be an increase in guests who want to come to the park to see the new scene.
- They are going to sell the redheads pirate outfit to little girls at the nearby store.
- I am pretty sure they will also throw a private party so you can be on of the last to see the original scene before it goes away.

Also, don't think for a second that this will be the end of it....

Some examples...
Peter Pan - The indians
Mr. Toad - Basically going to jail because you drove drunk and then went to hell
Pinocchio - Whipping sound after being turned into a donkey and being thrown in a cell
Splash Mountain - tied to Song of the South

Pretty much this for me.

IMO there's nothing wrong with updating things to better align with attitudes that are socially accepted currently. Obviously with some art you wouldn't want to needlessly censor away from their original vision, but the theme parks and their attractions and rides are supposed to be an ever-evolving landscape.

The old scene doesn't super bother me to be honest, I see it as a teachable moment. But I fully understand why they might look to revamp it.

Looks like the characters are still there, just a changing of the scene a bit

I also dislike the chase scenes that go around on a powered lazy susan. I wish THOSE got upgraded. I am all for tweaking older rides, look forward to seeing it.

Then let's get rid of the whole ride.
Pirates were jerks, it is a ride about pirates.

Another possible change that makes me cringe at the thought.
Disney leave this history alone. And undo the ridiculous pc changes from years ago. SMH....
I would love to see the movie add ins set permanent sail too. :) Matter of fact pc people can set sail with them as well. I do not always agree with pc. It can go way too far to be reasonable and rational. Do some people really think there is anything pc about pirates to begin with? C'mon now, don't be daft. Lol
I hope the red headed wench and auction scene is not changed next year or ever. This is killing me :(

see.....there we go again.....lazy susan....why not Sally Wagon, Dragon Sally...downtrodden Sally....or Lazy Zan-Zu.....next thing you know.....we will be talking about dumb waiters.........

"Mommy, what is this auction about?"

"Well, dear, the pirates over here have kidnapped these women and are selling them into slavery. The pirates over there are buying the women so they can rape them."

"That's delightful, Mommy. I hope no poopy pants liberals ever ask for this scene to be altered."
