I think it's important to remember the books are young adult fiction and really shouldn't be held up to high literary standards. I'm a voracious reader, critic, and a writer, and I found it relatively easy to get past the problems with the books.
We went to see this movie last week while we were in Orlando and actually enjoyed it (had never heard of the book prior to the movie), but we left talking about how it was like watching a medieval version of Star Wars (as someone else briefly mentioned) with very pronounced similiarites all the way through (not just an occasional likeness).
Honestly, it's so much alike that I'm surprised somebody can't be sued for intellectual theft.
That said, my daughter found the book in one of the outlet malls while we were shopping the day after seeing the movie and bought it. She's planning on getting the second one too.
