Saving Reciepts...?

I've been in the habit of saving ALL receipts from purchases made with credit cards... Why? I don't really know. In case we need them. I save a years worth in a large envelope, and we put the previous years envelope in our firepit in the summer.

I'm thinking it's ridiculous to save them (as I am Spring Cleaning )

I think I might just start saving the receipts of items we might need to return, or for large purchases.

What do you do?

I save them until I see the purchase on my cc statement or debit card transaction, then I toss them.
if there is something I may need to return, I save until I know I am not returning or the return period runs out.

I have a basket in my kitchen, I just throw receipts in there, and when it gets full I go thru and clean it out, saving any I need.

I save the big ones until I know I won't have to return it, but other than that, they go in the trash.

I save my receipts for a full month. I put them in an envelope so that I can find them if I need anything. The only ones I save longer than a month are for the bigger purchases. I file those away with the warranty papers.

i save all of my CC receipts until the next CC bill comes in, check them off on the statement, then burn them.

All my receipts get stapled to either the CC bills or the checking account statements and filed in with the monthly paperwork. All paperwork gets transferred to banker's boxes at the end of the year, and all yearly paperwork is saved for seven years.

Regarding the CC receipts, I'm so glad I save them. I bought a pair of shoes a few years ago that finally wore out and I wanted another pair just like them. But I couldn't remember the name of the shoes or even where I got them from. I did, however, remember when I got them. Went to my closet, opened up the banker's box for that year, looked through the receipts and was able to order another pair from the same vendor I got the original pair from. Bonus! Got them for less than I paid the first time!

Another less flashy example is when DH's Department did an audit on training expenses the previous year. We were able to provide ALL copies of the receipts they asked for. Other guys had to pay back some of the previously reimbursed expenses because they couldn't provide receipts. They said they couldn't provide them because they turned in all their receipts, but IA said if we (and others) kept copies, they should have, too.

So you see, saving CC receipts is a good idea. The few times it's saved my butt has been well worth storing them.

I toss most of them in a shoebox under the desk and clean it out a few times a year. Every January or so I drop the big keepers into a ziploc with the year on it and file it away in case something comes up and believe it or not, there have been times I've needed it. It works for us
