Saving on Baby - suggestions?

I can't believe there are a lot of people who use cloth diapers. Do you have a service who Picks them up and cleans them or do you do it yourself. I don't see the savings if you are doing separate loads for those diapers which will cause higher water bill and higher electric bill. Also those diapers do not absorb like the disposable diapers where it pulls the moisture away from the skin.

I personally hate cloth diapers, but one of my lovely children had an allergy to the chemicals that disposable diapers released when wet.

They are big PITA every night before going to bed I threw washed diapers in dryer and started the bleach water mix in washer machine, so every time I changed a diaper I had to haul it down stairs to the washer machine, yuck. I was so happy when she was potty trained.

Cloth diapers are cheaper to use but they are a lot of work.

Hi I don't think your rude, just blunt. lol good luck on the disboard,:duck:

Congrats to you! My baby is due in November so I'm in the same situation as you are! So far I've purchased a few packs of diapers in different brands. I've been catching good sales on them and since I don't know how baby will do with specific brands, a few packs of each will work until we know for sure what works. I also got a few good sale deals on wipes and lotions, etc.

We plan on getting a car seat/stroller combo with an additional car seat for our second car that won't be removed from the car.

I'm planning on doing a lot of my own diy stuff as far as nursery decorations, blankies, stuff like that.
I suggest getting a good stroller, and a stroller frame like a snap and go for the infant seat. Strollers in the combo tend to be bulky, and not great, and many choose to go buy another stroller after the infant seat is outgrown. I liked having a good umbrella- like stroller for my van, and a jogger or something similar for neighborhood walks.

Well, like you said, to each his own. I certainly would not buy anything that cannot be fully sanitized, such as most breast pumps, but a CD can be. How is that any different from sitting on a public toilet? What about buying used clothing that people have, at the very least, sweated in? Sitting on a seat in public transportation, a rental car, a used car? What about the sheets at a hotel? I mean, all of these things can have gross things happen in them. Sheets and diapers can be fully sanitized. Public transportation and rental car seats are probably never disinfected. *shrug* We're all different in our level of squeamishness!

BTW, thanks for not taking offense before. I really wasn't trying to be rude and hope I didn't sound like it.
No offense taken. The way I see it is when it comes to my baby, I only want the best. That is the reason why I will not purchase anything used for her. I will not take hand me downs from strangers. You do not know how these people handled these items. You don't know how well sanitized they were. There are just those things you should never get used no matter what (breast pump, car seat, bottles, cloth diapers and reusable wipes). Me personally I will not purchase used clothing but those other things just can't be controlled like using public restrooms and seating but I don't care but if it involves my baby I will do whatever to protect her. Would you wear used underwear from someone online or a used toothbrush. Both of those can be sanitized?

I felt the same way with my first child. However, after the next 4 came along, I realized how much money there is to be saved by using 2nd hand! Especially when you have friends who are dying to get the stuff out of their house. My parents are well off, but sensible, and my mom set up a whole nursery at her house, plus had a swing, bouncer, highchair, toys, clothes, etc., that she would buy at garage sales, for almost nothing. I even got a triple stroller for free!

I'm assuming the "blunt" comment is for me? That is one of the disadvantages of the internet - you cannot control how your comments are interpreted. I try my best to never say anything on the internet that I would not also say in person. If I type something that I wouldn't say in person, I delete it. I haven't had any trouble on the DISboards although I have been on the other end, finding some other comments pretentious and condescending. However, that seems to be very few and far between, at least in the forums I have participated in. Also, none of my other comments are so...passionate. I have been CDing for many years, and I can get my feathers ruffled when misinformation is disseminated.

I'm not sure how long ago you cloth diapered, but doing a bleach water mix is completely unnecessary and is actually never recommended (on a regular basis though on occasion is usually fine). I know thirty years ago, people used wet pails, bleached every time, etc. That is no longer the case with "modern" cloth diapers. You wash diapers just like you would anything else using almost any detergent. Again, I just ask that people be informed rather than spread false information.

I completely understand and respect that. There are certainly things I would never trust used, especially safety-wise. For example, I would never buy a used car seat, and even though professionals (as in pediatricians, etc) recommend against it as well, some people have no issue with it. The things I have felt comfortable purchasing used, whether I know the person or not, I take time and care to sanitize it in a way that I feel is thorough. In fact, I do the same with new because factories and transport trucks aren't clean, and of course people touched the items in the store. I can understand the want to compare underwear and toothbrushes, but it is really not the same. Cloth diapers are of much higher quality and made to be used over many years, hundreds of washes, and multiple children. But sure, if I wasn't able to afford new underwear, I would just sanitize what I could afford from Goodwill or wherever. I am fortunate enough to afford what I want, not just what I need, and it sounds like you are, too. That's great! I just hope you can support, or at least respect, someone who isn't as fortunate or maybe has strong beliefs in reduce, reuse, recycle. I certainly sell or donate my good condition items, even if I wouldn't personally buy those same items used, because I know it helps out a lot of people who aren't as lucky as my family.

Wait til birth to find out the gender. LOL! We did and I got a LOT stuff I needed instead of just wanted. With a girl, people will buy all sorts of cute dresses just because! www.couponingtodisney.com has a lot of savings on it, diapers were someting I used to coupon a lot for because my daughter was in daycare, but cloth at home. Best thing about cloth, you can resell them too. I sold some and kept some for my sister in the future.

My cloth diaper baby is 21 now, so yes back then it was normal to leave the washer machine with full water and a cup of bleach. Yucky who wants pale of stinky bleach water sitting any where. or how ever cding is done now. sorry I like disposable.

Our son is 15 months now and so far I think we may have bought 5-6 outfits for him lol

my wife's mom love those bid sites and get a lot of cloths from there. so that has help us out a lot. she get cloths of all different sizes so we have cloths from new born all the way yup to 2T now so we are good for a while and most of the cloths are new or hardly worn.

I was planning on the combo with the jogger (rubber tires, not plastic, good recline, etc) for the suv and buying a separate lighter umbrella stroller for the car. I spent HOURS at babies r us trying out different size strollers, different brands, checking all the features. I'm a runner so the jogger is a must.

Oh I totally agree that a wet pail full of dirty diapers is gross! Yeah, thankfully, things have changed since then. I know cloth diapers aren't for everyone...then or now! We all just have to do what we like and what works best for our family. :)

Our baby is due in June and I am a budget dork and super frugal. I won't be cloth diapering, though, but I digress. Here are my tips!

Amazon Prime is your friend! I shop primarily on Amazon, but go to Target for diaper deals. Check Amazon Warehouse for deals. There are always baby items. I got a Chicco base for the infant seat for $35. Steal! http://www.amazon.com/b?node=10158976011
I use Google Chrome and have the CamelCamelCamel extension installed and set price alerts for items on Amazon and then wait and buy it when my desired price hits. http://camelcamelcamel.com/
If your spouse or partner is taking any FMLA leave, save for it now. We started saving $80/wk last summer and have a nice cash stash so both of us can enjoy the baby for 4 weeks.
If you have a Kindle, or an E-Reader of some kind, consider renting library books via their Overdrive page as opposed to purchasing books. Libraries have come a long way!
Don't listen to what everyone else says you need to buy. For example, everyone said we need a Pack n Play, but I think they're baby jails and terrible. Check Lucie's List: http://www.lucieslist.com/
Buy the crib used, provided it's not a drop side, but buy the mattress new. We scored a $600 Crate n Barrel crib on Craigslist for $200.

Have fun! We were just at WDW in March and I had a lot of fun buying Disney clothes for our little guy. I can't wait. Good luck!

How did you feel being preggo at WDW? We are talking about trying to sneak in a long weekend in Orlando as a babymoon before ours gets here. I'd be about 6.5mo by that point. Were there many rides you could go on that were allowed?

Daycare is far my biggest expense at 17K a year, and I have a 5 yo in Pre-K daycare, and a 7 year old in after care at the same daycare. The other costs pale in comparison, but daycare is not something to scrimp on.
as far as the rest, I got tons of stuff as gifts, I bought used, cloth diapered and breastfed. The actual feeding, diapering, clothing etc, is not that expensive that way.

We rode nearly everything except Splash, BTMRR, Space Mtn, Test Track, Tower of Terror, and Rockin Rollercoaster. We even rode 7DMT!

Check out the baby centers at each park, drink lots of water, sit when you need to, and always know where the closest bathroom is!

We leave for the FL Keys Sunday for our babymoon and already have baby's first trip planned to WDW in November.

That's so good to know! It'll be hubbys first time there and while he isn't a huge ride person to begin with, I'd hate to be the reason he wouldn't get to experience any of them (he won't do the single rider option because he said he would feel bad leaving me alone while he rode).

We're planning baby's first trip for next November when they will be one (food and wine for momma's bday, mickey and minnie for baby's!)

Have fun in the keys!
