"saved" beach chairs at hotel pools.

I think this is a problem at most large resorts. We just returned from the Flamingo in Las Vegas. We had the same problem with people going out about 7:00 and saving chairs. One morning the pool manager told us if we hadn't seen anyone at a saved chair for at least 30 minutes to go ahead and take them. We found two chairs with only towels on them at about 8:15 the people sitting by us said they had been there for about 45 minutes and not seen anyone. We took the chairs and at 11:00 a couple came over and chewed us out for taking the chairs and got mad when we didn't move. The funny thing is about 10 minutes later the pool had to shut down because of storms.

Funny story about a trip my wife and I took to New Orleans. The hotel we were staying in had a pool on the roof, we went up a couple times and saw towels on chairs but there were plenty of chairs available so we did't care. Later that night we were having a drink in the hotel bar and the bartender told us how one time Britney Spears was staying at the hotel with Justin Timberlake, she asked the hotel to clear out the pool so she could lay out, they refused, so she sent Justin up to ask people to leave so she could lay out. Of course they all refused. I wish I'd have been there, I'd have pointed out that she must be the bigger celeb since he was acting as her goon :)

I'm thinking of taking a morning walk to the pool when we're there just to clear out chairs, help out the life guards, they have more important things to do :)

...Move the stuff!!!!! It happens everywhere not just at Disney.
A couple of weeks ago we went to a beach resort in Maine. I watched a family of 5 put their stuff on 5 chairsand an umbrella/table and went to walk the beach. Now,they left around 9am and people started to come to the pool an look for chairs. By 10am these people were still MIA and there were older folks who couldn't sit because this
ignorant family hogged chairs!! It really ticked me off. But,my friend said "mind your own business, you have a chair". Well,I
couldn't!!!!!! I went up to this elderly couple(very sweet people)
and told them that the people that were saving chairs left at 9am
(at this point,it was 10:30!!!),and that they should just use the chairs around the table to get out of the sun. Well, after about 10 minutes they decided to do just that. This rude family came back at 12:30!!!!! Where do people get off thinking that's ok????
When I saw them walking down the beach I knew they would be pissed so I felt like I needed to "help" the older folks deal with it seeing I instigated the "take over". Believe me,I couldn't wait to let loose on them!!! Well, they were really mad! They made a scene "who did we think we were!" LOLOL I said "tough, you don't like it,go get the owner!" This is the best part: The mother sends junior to go get the owner. Well, the owner comes immediately and wants to know what the problem is. When I tell him that "rude family " was holding chairs from 9-12:30 he says to the family,"tough"! They proceeded to say they wouldn't be back next year blah blah blah!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!
The next day a BIG sign by the pool: NO SAVING CHAIRS/TABLES!
That's my best chair saving story for the summer!!!!!

Way to go airhead, You showed those rude people. Now if this happens at Disney when you are there, you do the same thing. :D :D Horray for you.

Well, all I can say is I hope we don't have a big problem with this in 3 weeks at the Polynesian. But, it does make me feel better to know that theft is a non-issue at WDW. There just can't be any theivery going on with all those folks just leaving stuff around.
I just hope we don't run into chair savers. My dh is very, ah, how should I say it nicely, 'outspoken' when people do things like this.

I'm very good at being "politely rude" when people are acting ignorant!!!!!

I don't think you'll have much trouble with this at Wilderness Lodge. We were just there in June, and we didn't. Chairs were plentiful, and we were always able to take as many as we needed -- even at mid-day. We were not always able to sit in the "best area" in front of the slide and near the bar, but we were always able to get chairs somewhere in the pool area.

By the way, we LOVED Wilderness Lodge. You'll have a great time.

That is incredible! We were there the first week in May and you could hardly breath the pool was so full. The entire week we were there you couldn't find a spot anywhere. We're DVC and at some points the overflow came over to the DVC pool.

Of course the families of 10 or so shamelessly biking over from FW to use the WL pool didn't help! We were astounded at how blatent they were and WL CM's didn't do a thing about it. It was pretty infuriating!

I have a complaint of the opposite nature. We were at a hotel last week (not in Disney) and my husband had his shorts, shoes, towels and my sons shoes on the table with another towel on a chair. We were playing in the pool with our children when a group of people sat down at our table, moved all our things to the side and started showing pictures to each other on their lap tops! My husbands wallet was in his pants so I got up and moved all our things, they never even said , oh sorry were you sitting here or anything. I did not care enough to say anything to them, but how rude!

Sandyneck, that's a very good point. I am not a "chair-saver" at all (you can't save chairs at 8am AND make EE with a pre-schooler and an infant! ;) ), but when I go to the pool, I will bring a coverup, shoes, sunscreen, etc. and put them on a chair (or two if my DH is with me.) Not just a book. If we have our kids with us (usually we do), we HAVE to be in the pool with them because they're little and can't swim well or at all. I would like those chairs as I am using the pool area. I have not left to go somewhere else and we will be using them. This, I do not consider what everyone has been calling "chair saving".

If someone is actively using the pool area (either in the pool or in a chair), and they place obviously personal items, and someone moves them to take their chair, then I think the mover is just as rude as the chair saver that saves a chair they might not ever use.

Sorry if I just sent this topic to the debate board, but I think we need some clarification before the "chair wars" get going.

...Move the stuff!!!!!

Airhead - can we start a rebellion?

Towels in the chair was my ONLY complaint - linked to rude people - at WL when we were there 7/6 - 7/11. Granted - a busy week, BUT...they never did a sweep for towels while we were there. Constantly there were towels on the chairs - both clean AND wet/dirty from inconsiderate people.

IF there were any signs at all of personal items...sandals, sun glasses, a drink...anything...we passed the chair. But, we learned quickly that most of the chairs were actually empty. They just LOOKED like they weren't because they were full of towels.

As a person who likes shade ( a redhead with that wonderful redhead skin...) I LOVE the idea of a pool Maitre D...I had a very good laugh about the east coast / west coast... I would like MY shade with a standing order for a Rum Runner please. Thanks. :)

Thanks for everyones replys!

*LOL* Maybe I should just spend $20 for a beach chair during our "grocery stop". Where I go, it goes! Then I don't have to worry!

Airhead - good for you for "standing up"!!

:earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsgirl:

Hmm... you guys are giving me an idea for my next video "The Revenge of the Chair Towel". :P

Here's the idea:

It's time to get even with the chair savers. Since I've always had a room with a view of the pool... when I get up, I could watch and see who is reserving chairs with towels and stuff. I'd do this right before me and the mrs take our morning wakeup showers and then head to the parks. This usually takes 30-60 minutes. On our way to the parks, I could take a stroll by the pool, pick up all of the towels and stuff that people were using to reserve the chairs and stick them in a pile on one of the tables (my evil side says I should just chuck it all in the pool). Now, the question is... will the Mrs bean me over the head for this idea?

;)

Just kidding, of course...

.....I hope everyone here is sending that email to Disney! Its one thing to complain here on the DIS,but if we want changes we gotta ALL complain to Disney,or else what's the use??????

This is really making me have evil thoughts, like hiding in the bushes and remove things as the evil chair savers leave. I know my wife will want to sleep in, so if I'm there waiting in the bushes at like 6am.

Maybe I'll stop by 1/2 price books, see if I can get a bunch of books really really cheap, and then I'll save all the chairs, and give them away to families as they come to stay and play at the pool, turning those away who tell me they were just going to save some chairs for later.

"Yes, all of the chairs are saved for my extended family who are on their way down, but you're here now to swim, well then please take these chairs"

Next person...

"Oh you're family is waiting for you at the bus stop to head to AK, and you're coming back at 2 to swim, but want chairs now? Wow, good thing I got here first and reserved these chairs for my extended family, my wife is the daughter of a Catholic mormon who has 67 brothers and sisters, plus their family, we have an entire floor here at $RESORT and we are spending the day at the pool, sorry, but check back when you're actually going to be at the pool using it and I'll see if there is something available."

More evil thoughts involving a flame thrower, a case of diet cherry coke, six ducks and 3 dozen golfballs come to mind...

OK, ya'll tell me if I've been inconsiderate........

Is it the same issue at Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach? We've only been to TL, but we get there at opening and head for the kiddie activity area (sorry, don't know the name). Adjacent to this area is a little hut with two or three picnic tables. We usually pull one or two chairs (not lounges) up to our picnic table, unload our stuff (coolers, towels, changes of clothes, etc.) and go off to explore the park. We do visit the adjacent kiddie area, but also enjoy the wave pool, the creek, some of the water slides. We usually bring lunch, or on the rare occasion we didn't bring lunch, we bought it at Typhoon Lagoon and brought it back to our picnic table rather than eating at the tables in front of the food stands. We were gone from the table for maybe an hour at a time, then we'd come back to our table, re-hydrate, grab a snack, rest a bit, and head off again.

Am I bad???

Someone mentioned a maitre d for the pools. Well, we stayed somewhere in June that basically did that! It was in Colorado Springs, the Broadmoar, 5 star and top notch service! When you go to the pool area you had to sign in with your room number and then someone there at the sign in would carry your towels to your chairs, they let you pick out where you wanted to sit among those still available. I didn't even have to think about chair savers! It was great! I'd definitetly take a few bucks for tip at DW just to get a chair!

I don't think you are bad. At the water parks, you pretty much have to stake a claim to something or you won't get anything. The waterparks are a different animal than the hotel pools. You can't sneak into a waterpark at 7, stake a claim to some seats and then return to the park later in the day. You get to a waterpark when everyone else does, pick a place to park your gear, and then have fun. Unless you get a locker, you don't have much of a choice, but to put it down on a chair or at a table.

sarivers - No, I don't think you're wrong. You are in the park.

I think the "chair savers" are people who want to spend the day in the parks then come back to "their" personal chair.

ktulu - love your idea!!!

That's the (current) system and if you don't grab the table for the day someone else will BUT it's not a good system. The table is tied up for the day and you're probably only using it for 30 minutes or so.

I have to agree. It's one thing to save a chair or 2 at the water parks but a table is different, especially in the resort pools. When we've gone to the pool, we usually get some lunch for me, DH, and DS-4. We can never get a table to eat at b/c people have them saved. This was a big problem at Vero Beach, where there was not many other places to eat lunch.

We sat down at one of the tables just to eat and then we were going to leave. Up until that point no one was near the table for a long time. (We tried to sit on the ground, but DS was 1 1/2 at the time....I'm sure you parents know how difficult it is to get a toddler to eat as it is. ;) ) A woman came out of the pool yelling that the table was taken. We told her we just wanted to eat our lunch and that was it. A CM politely put her in her place. Good thing b/c my usually easygoing DH can have a temper if provoked.

Stimpy - To stay on topic here, I'm responding to your post in a new thread.
