Savannah GA...Where to stay?

We are heading to VWL in Oct and hope to stay in Savannah a couple of nights. DD has been dying to eat at Paula Deens, so this time we are finally going sidetrack a couple days from our Disney trip.

Anyway, can someone suggest a nice clean place to stay for a family of four. It would be great to be in the area where the restaurant is. I assume it is fairly safe around there. Bed and Breakfasts would be fine if they allow that many in a room. Any suggestions would be great!!

We really like the President's Quarters bed and breakfast and Presidents street. Great location and a super breakfast! Will be staying there again soon, I hope.

I can't help with hotels, but can suggest that if you plan to eat at The Lady & Sons, you will need to arrive early. They begin taking names several hours prior to opening for lunch and dinner and then give you a time to come back. I believe walking up prior to when you wish to dine will result in being disappointed. It seems as though when we went, there was even a line waiting to get your name on the list for an hour or more before they began taking names.

The Westin on the rover is nice. Have you thought about Disney's HHI? It is only about 40 minutes from Savannah, and doesn't come with the smell of a paper mill.

We stayed at the Hilton in the downtown area and booked a package which included a terrific buffet breakfast as well as a tour of the city.
We also were able to have dinner at Paula Dean's restaurant - it was heavenly!
We got in line about an hour before they took names and by luck only were still able to get in -- it is VERY busy, so get there and get a place in line well ahead of the time they start taking name. (The wait was worth every minute, by the way!) We hope to spend more time down there again - we only stayed one night and then drove over to HHI - the drive was nice and didn't take more than perhaps 40 minutes.
Have a terrific time in Savannah - it is a wonderful town!

We had a tough time getting a place. I prefer Hotwire/Priceline. I have always had a good room.

This time, nothing was available downtown. We went for the airport area and get the Staybridge Suites. Nice room, awesome full breakfast included. We got it for $80 per night.

In the Historic District, I like the Hampton Inn on East Bay Street. They have a good continental breakfast, too.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn on MLK, Jr. Blvd. It is on the very edge of the historic district, but very near the visitors center and the tour busses. It was luxurious, but not stuffy. (Yes Hampton Inn, luxurious)

You could hear traffic outside, so request a high floor at any small hotels or B&B's.

We saw the Hampton Inn on Bay Street, and it is very convenient to the river and to the main parts of the historic district.

You will have to get to Paula Dean's early.

We stayed at Disney's Hilton Head most of the time, and it was very convenient. We got 2 vacations in 1.

That Westin on the other side of the river is nice. Good luck on Paula Dean's Place. I don't think locals eat there anymore. From what I can tell, its mostly the Sr. tour bus groups. Nothing wrong with that, its just for every 1 tour guide in line is a party of 50.

There's a great hotel on East Bay Street called the East Bay St Inn (duh). It has great old heart pine floors and period furnishings. Lots of character, if you're looking for something more like that. It's my favorite place to stay down there.

We went down to have lunch there last Sunday. They started taking reservations at 9:30. We got there at 10:30. A long line of people were waiting on us. The first reservation we could get wasn't until 3:00.
Needless to say, we ate somewhere else. Of course, this is summer time.
You may fair better in October. We have eaten there before and it was delicious. Good luck.

Our oldest daughter goes to college in Savannah and I stay there a LOT. Our favorite place is the Eliza Thompson House but if we can get in there, we stay at the Marriott in the historic district. You'll really enjioy Savannah.

When we stayed there before Sunday checkin at HHI, we rented a house that was great for us (two couples and one with a child). I used the website www . vrbo . com and had no problems. It was fun to stay in the old houses that had character instead of a hotel room.

Thanks for all the replies folks. We decided to give the Clubhouse Inn and Suites a try. It is about 7 miles from Paula Deens on Abercorn. It got pretty good reviews on tripadvisor. We got a King size suite for $114 per night that includes hot breakfast. We would have really loved the historic district but couldnt bring ourselves to pay over $200 a night just so we could walk to Paula Deens.

I live in Savannah, what else do you want to know?

There is a Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot and a Day's Inn downtown. They are all very nice. The Bay St Inn is also. You also have the Marshall House on Broughton St.

If you don't care if you stay downtown, there is a very new Hilton in midtown, along with a Mariott. They are closer to the Malls and the Army Base.

As for food, Paula's quality has gone down since she has taken herself out of the kitchen.

For good seafood, try the River House on River St. Huey's on river st is also good.

The North Beach Grill at Tybee is a Great place. In fact, it's my favorite place to eat around here. Drop me a line and I'll get you directions.
On a clear day, you can 'almost' see the Disney HHI beach house from the North Beach. (Its actually just around the point on HHI).

Most places around town have good food. It's the location that makes it.

My first choice would be the Eliza Thompson House!
