I am looking for a good SAT prep book to buy my son who will be a junior next year. He already does the question of the day (online) ... just wondering if someone used a book that they thought really helped them.

Also ... did you take any SAT prep classes ... and did you find them helpful?

Thanks a bunch!

I used the official college board SAT study guide book and it helped a little bit.

I ended up with a 1770 first attempt.

My friend took courses at Kaplan (i think thats what its called) and got a 2200 first try.

Your son will do better based on his natural ability though. A book or class can't exactly enhance his study skills.

One tip though, make sure he knows vocabulary. And review basic math. Those were things that I never thought about.

My DS used Kaplan--we called them the purple books. The practice tests helped him identify areas to work on. For instance he was weak on comma usage. FWIW--he was a National Merit Scholar. Good luck! It's a very exciting time in your child's life.

:thumbsup2

I took the SAT without taking practice exams, going to a special class, or working out of a practice book and did just fine. My friend, on the other hand, worked out of numerous books, took two classes and I still did about 200 points better than she did. In fact, she actually did better on the PSAT with no studying than the SAT. IMO, natural ability plays a huge part in the SAT. I knew a girl who got a 900 and was proud of how "good" she did :confused3 . It's different for everyone.

That being said, we did do some practice during school my junior year. It definitely wouldn't hurt to buy a prep book.
