Hi...I know nothing about Sapphire Beach but was just curious why the ped. recommended it. We're doing Coral World and Coki Beach on St. Thomas in a few weeks. I have two boys, 9 and 7. They really want to snorkel as much as possible.

I see you're a LI'er too! :) I'm south shore -- Sayville! When are you cruising?

My sister just returned from a Celebrity cruise and loved Sapphire Beach. The cabdriver in St. Thomas recommended it - said it was less crowded than the other beaches, less expensive, and the best on St. Thomas. We will do Sapphire Beach on our own in July from DCL.

::MickeyMo I have read that you need to be cautious of the large iguanas in the wooded area behind the beach. Is this true ?? Small lizards I can deal with, but not giant ones !:scared1:

Great beach, white sand, calypso bands and the Best snorkeling on the island. However Megan's Bay is a bit quieter with calmer slightly murkier water. Have fun.

Does anyone know how this beach would compare to Trunk Bay? I'm wondering if it's worth the trip to St. John. We would have more time if we stayed on St. Thomas.

Thanks,

Joanne

We just got back from a trip to the USVI and went to Sapphire and Trunk Bay.

Trunk Bay is amazing. Clear, calm water, underwater snorkle trail and white sift sand. But once it starts to get crowded, it was time to leave. It gets very crowded, especially during the week when the cruise ships bring groups over. We got there early in the morning and stayed till mid day then moved to a more secluded beach.

Sapphire Beach is a great place to spend a day. Long beach, clear water. It's rougher than Trunk Bay. There is a reef to snorkle around. Tons of fish. The fish were eating right out of our hands. Even on days when the crusie ships bring people in, it doesn't seem too crowded.

You would have a lot more time at Sapphire due to the time it takes to get over to St. John.

We spent the day at Saphire last summer. I didn't like it as well as Megan's Bay. The water was rough and cloudy and I didn't think the beach was as natural as Megans; there are hotels/condos on the site.

Thanks for the replies!

I am so torn because I want to see Trunk Bay as it gets such rave reviews BUT I don't want to waste a lot of time traveling to get there. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

HELP!

Thanks for all the replys. The pediatrician recommeended Sapphire Beach due to the close proximity and ther smaller size of Coki Beach . He did recommend Coki over Sapphire for snorkeling. I thought I could take the children and go to Coral world also if I go to Coki.. I think it's about a 10-15 dollar cab ride. We've been to Magens Bay before and wanted to try something new but not take an wxcursion.

BTW NY Disney Mom- sailing 5/1/04 and we're from West Islip

Cool!! You're leaving soon!! Please..come back and tell us all about your trip!! Especially about your St. Thomas day. I know I read somewhere that a cab is $7 per person, one way. So I'm thinking it's cheaper to rent a car for the day for the four of us.

Have a fabulous cruise!!!!!

We have done Sapphire Beach 3 times....once with a DCL excursion and twice on our own. We really liked Sapphire beach better than Megans Bay.....MB was nice and more natural looking, but we found the whole rent a chair thing a pain in the butt, especially since you have to leave a deposit and hike up to storage space and pick up and return your chair yourselves...too much work for me on vacation.

SB also has a pool at one end that you are allowed to use. The iguaunas are around but they are not on the beach...they are behind the beach and were fun to watch but we were told not to go near them as they will bite. They do not interfere with beach goers at all. There is also a small shop selling souvieneers and snacks and drinks, etc. There is also hairbraiding.

It was much cheaper to do this on our own compared to the DCL excursion.
