Southern California Santa Monica in July, with a four-year-old

I will be in California from July 4th through the 9th, staying in Santa Monica with a couple nights in Anaheim.

Does anyone have any recommendations for activities in Santa Monica with a four-year-old? Would it be better to take a couple day trips or drive out of the area instead?

Thought I'd try giving this a bump!

I did do a search but other than the Santa Monica Pier, I wasn't able to find much. Any advice?

Does your kid like planes?

Airport Park is a great park with a really cool playground with a control tower overlooking the Santa Monica airport runway.

Take my son there every time we visit the in-laws.

Bonus: free.

Also a flight museum right there but we've never actually been.
