After we leave DL and the Anaheim area we are going home via 101 for a bit and staying at KOA in Santa Margarita for 2 nights. Is anyone from around that area and if so, can you give us some tips of things to do?

We are travelling with 2 small kids who LOVE the beach :) I know it's close to Pismo Beach as well as San Luis Obispo. I know Hearst Castle is just a bit further up the road but (a) DH and I went there 10 yrs ago and (b) not something small children would be interested in. Thanks for any help/advice/recommendations :)

Santa Margarita is still a ways north of San Luis and Pismo. There's Morro Bay, Cayucos Pier, Cambria is a nice little village, and there is a zoo in Atascadero:

You may want to check out Avila Beach which is a little north of Pismo Beach. And, if you do go to Pismo, look for the Old West Bakery for yummy cinnamon rolls. DTD Anaheim now sells their rolls at a kiosk! Also, Splash Cafe in Pismo has fantastic clam chowder!

There is a KOA at Avila Beach which puts you much closer to beach access.

It is free to fish from the piers. You wont need a fishing license. Piers are located at Pismo, Avila and Port San Luis...the last two are the best to try.

We've already booked our kabin at the KOA in Santa Margarita; the kabins at the Avila KOA are WAY more money than the SM location - more than twice the price!

Also, fishing is so NOT our thing LOL

Just the thought of DH with a fishing rod has me in hysterics!!:lmao::rotfl2: He's definitely more of a......non-fishing kind of husband haha

Wow! You'll like the lake..went sailing there once years ago.

Avila Beach tends to be a little warmer than Pismo and there is Shell Beach between the two.
