This appeared in my inbox moments ago. I'm actually laughing and wondering if this pick is because Dr. Oz is tied up promoting his latest book or if Dr. Rey from Dr. 90210 has too many augmentations scheduled already?

I take it to mean that Obama intends to address public health issues with a Surgeon General who is actually somebody the public will listen to.

He's a neurosurgeon at Emory -- whatever his tv persona, he's no lightweight. Likewise, Oz, though a marketing maniac, is a respected heart surgeon who continues to do clinical research and publish regularly in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Rey... I suspect not.

My brother's heart surgery was done by his partner at Columbia Presbyterian in NYC..The same Dr who operated on Bill Clinton. Dr Oz is certainly not a lightweight..

Or it could be that he is a practicing neursurgeon and an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University of Medicine (definitely right up there with Suessland). Or maybe he has long been a advocate for Americans leading healthy lives.

Oh yeah, has to be the Dr. Suess connection.

Could you at least man up (or women up) and admit that no matter what Obama does or who he picks you're not going to like it?

I know Sanjay from way back before his TV career. When he was a doctor that worked along with all the new biotech companies that were going public. He is a brilliant guy. (along with adorable hubba hubba) Then as the IPO market dried up he got into tv.

I think he'd be great at it.

He did some fine surgical work in Iraq during OIF in 2003.

He is media savvy (as should be expected as he worked for CNN & publishes a column in Time magazine).

That whole Hillary Care gig OTOH.....not so much.......

Finally, anyone who gets on the wrong side of Michael Moore (Sicko et al), is good in my book.

ITA! Excellent choice. I just hate to lose him on CNN. Like Dr Oz, he explains things so the average person can understand, and is very passionate about his work.

His job is to communicate medical concerns and health information to the public. I'd say he is pretty qualified. Let's not forget that while he has become a pretty face on TV, he also had the skills to perform brain surgery a few times while he was embedded with the soldiers.
