Sanaa Bread Service- What's So Special?

I think the bread service at both Sanaa and Jiko is good but I don't understand the hype either. The only reason we ordered it was because everyone makes such a big deal about it. Honestly, I would prefer to have the sauces as an accompaniment to chicken or beef but, in general, we typically don't like to have bread before our meal. It just ends up filling us up before our meal and I would rather use my calories on something with protein instead of just empty calories. But, judging upon the number of vloggers who make a big deal reviewing ANY bread (and butter) that is served prior to a meal, we must be in the minority.

I'm not sure about the vloggers. I agree the hype is part of the reason I will be ordering the bread service when I'm at Sanna in a few weeks. I do think that part of the reason the bread service will be fun is we don't generally eat bread with our meals either so it is something different to do on vacation. My 3 year year old loves any type of bread so at least she will eat something.

We are fortunate to have a variety of Indian restaurants near us that we frequent. The food itself at Sanaa (I always order the paneer tikka) is not as good as our local restaurant. The sauce isn't creamy or spicy enough. The naan, however, is much better. I think it's because it's served fresh and hot as opposed to out on a buffet. The variety of accompaniments definitely helps also.

I very much agree. None of the food at WDW is a spicy as I like it. Especially at Sanaa. Next time I'll ask if they can kick it up.

I like it so much because they can do it gluten free.

Gluten free bread at a restaurant is unusual, gluten free naan is unheard of. And like the regular naan, it is fresh and hot.
Same! My husband and I sought it out specifically because of the novelty of GF naan. It was good, but overall we have way better Indian food at home and probably won't return.

For me it’s having the sauces not the bread.

But is everyone on here so gungho about Sanaa's bread service simply because they don't have good Indian food where they're from

Doesn’t matter that I’ve got the better India Mahal at home, if I want Indian food while I’m in Orlando. :)

Order the service and use the sauces on the meal. :)

Quibble about word choice.... I don’t think “hype” as a word should be used in regards to people who are fans. Hype to me is advertising; the company itself hyping it up. But people being excited about it isn’t hype. It’s either enjoyment of something or anticipation of something.

We went last summer basically because DH wanted the bread service. He loved it, I thought it was just ok. I did enjoy a nice wine and the rest of the food was fine. Our server was great also.

If you have great Indian restaurants where you live, I doubt you will find Sanaa all that special. Unfortunately Indian cuisine is not common in many places, at least its not common in the various cities Ive lived in or family and friends have lived in. I think its kind of like the Lobster Rolls in WDW. Many people rave about them. Ask a lot of folks from New England and they will tell you they are not even close. Some say Homecomin is amazing Fried Chicken. Living in the Carolinas, Our bad Fried Chicken is better than that. And if you want to talk BBQ at the various festivals in EPCOT that people rave about. Im sure the folks in Texas, KC, and my fellow Carolinians can get you a list at a minimum of 10 BBQ spots that would shame that food.
Exactly this. I've lived on or near four coasts, in the south, in the north, in the west, in the far west (AK), and now in Virginia. What you say is absolutely true--if you live in an area known for a particular style or dish, then rarely will you find its equal anywhere else. However, in terms of attempting dishes under the limitation of appealing to a variety of appetities (cost cutting savings, after all, means making dishes palatable to the hordes), Disney does a solid job overall. Sanaa falls into that category. I live, at a minimum, two hours away from a decent Middle Eastern or Mediterranean or fresh seafood restaurant. The sauces at Sanaa are good but perhaps lack the complexity you could find in NYC, Boston, L.A., Miami, or even Anchorage. Still, they're a fine representation, as is the naan. Outside of V & A's, I'm not sure I'd go to any Disney restaurant with the expectation to be amazed at the quality of food--sometimes we have been, just as sometimes we've been underwhelmed (smcabee's examples are spot on). Still, as far as Disney food goes, there are far worse places than Sanaa.

I think it's partly the communal aspect of it that makes it fun. Sitting there just enjoying a glass or two of wine , good conversation with my family and sharing the sampler is the perfect start to a great night in my opinion. Yes individually there's nothing earth shattering about the service but taken as a whole it's one of my favorites at Disney.

It's the sauces and chutneys that come with it.

This.

I had the Chicken Tandoori and shared the bread service. To me, I could have easily just ordered the bread service and be completely satisfied.

We had so much leftover, that we took it home.
