I booked the bioluminescence tour on my own because it was the end of my
Disney cruise and I was staying in PR for several days to enjoy the sites. Anyway this tour has to be done in the evening in order to experience the bioluminescence. The tour I booked picked me up from my hotel and drove about hour away maybe more since we needed to stop at other hotels to pick up other people. Once we reached the tour area which was nothing more than just a people sitting in a park on a bench collecting your money, They provided everyone with basic instructions, life vest and of course your kayaks. My kayaking tour began just before sunset but they are also motorized boats that can take you to the bioluminescence bay but they are benefits to taking a kayak instead of a boat which I will explain. On the kayaks tour we made our way down a river through mangroves and trees that blanket over the river which took about 30 to 45 minutes to get to the bay. I've never done an evening kayaking tour and if that's all I did I would have enjoyed it. Anyway once you reach the open bay you'll notice that your paddles glow as they touch the water and the other kayakers where having fun splashing the water with their paddles. Being in a kayak you can easily put your hands in the water to see it glow as well. Now the tour company explained to us that they no longer allow people to swim in the bay but what's to prevent you from accidently falling out of your kayak into the water (wink, wink) which of course is not easily done if you are on a motorized boat. Now being an avid scuba diver I have experienced bioluminescence in the ocean before but in this warm bay surrounded by boaters and kayaks it was really magical. I'm looking forward to visiting PR again to experience this tour again. If I didn't answer some of your specific questions regarding this tour please asks.
