San Francisco port requiring booster shot

I would be less worried about SFO requiring it to get off the ship vs. that Canada requires it to entry the country as a cruise pax.

We just moved our booking for that cruise to the next year. Mostly due to DW undergoing cancer op and treatment Feb and March. But also the extra travel uncertainty (getting back into the US from CAN, etc). CDC putting our northern neighbor on the "avoid travel" list. And so on.

I've got no problems with the booster. Besides my wife's health , we were more concerned about ensuring testing/embarking after a few days in 'Diego. Who knows what could have happened Safe more than sorry. Not to mention what we might need to do back into the US (yet another test after we're off the boat?).

Remind me again how fun this is?

Wait a second....are you saying that, if you want to get off of the ship, you're required to get a booster shot?

What about those who are already fully vaccinated with all of the booster shots? Also, doesn't it take a while for any booster shot to take effect? If so, then the booster shot will have no effect for the short while you're off the ship.

Booster is effective immediately — it is additive to your prior 2 so if you were at 60% your boost pushes you to 90%. Hypothetical numbers for illustrative purposes only.

I'd be curious where you heard the booster is effective immediately. Everything I've heard states that while it does work faster (since it's a 'boost' to something your body is already familiar with), it still takes about a week to be effective (and two weeks to gain full efficacy). From what I understand pretty much any vaccine is going to take some time to reach full efficacy as your body needs time to produce antibodies, etc.

No sure about it being effective immediately but most of us got it last year so it is as effective as it's going to be by now. I got mine in November when they opened the booster up to anyone who had already had their first shot or shots.

Relative to cruising, a booster received today is good for a thing tomorrow requiring a booster. There is no two week gap, as with initial vaccination, to be considered "good to go."

So immediately depends on how long ago you were vaccinated. It appears to be around 7 days based on some initial studies.

Here in my state in Germany the booster was "recognized" for recreational things ( movies, health clubs concerts) starting day 15. Our restrictions require fully vaxxed plus antigen test or Boosted, no test.
Then last week they made the Boosted rule to from day of shot valid..

Now if anything here is based on "science", who knows.......just another example on how things changes overnight.

LOL I have to laugh because you hit the nail on the head. Most people I know only care when their vaxx apps shows them as officially valid boostered so they can go work out without testing.. Now if they have a physical benefit is a different issue.

Wait I take my above comment back a bit. When we sailed beginning of December. we did call my mom's DR to move her booster up so she would be at least a week in for the cruise. She is 70 and we felt medically speaking for her important. I got my the day before we flew out and took the risk of a side effect. I got lucky but was carrying ibu with just in case.

Excellent point. The definition I was using was when it actually provides protection (the science and physical reaction). The only reason I said anything is because one of my employees didn't realize that it takes about two weeks for the initial vaccine to reach maximum efficacy-she went to a party the night she got her second dose and got COVID. She then told me she wished she had known that it took two weeks for full efficacy; I didn't want others to make a similar mistake.
