My dh and I are planning to take a much needed vacation without kids. We are thinking about going in October. We want to stay in the US. We have thought that either NYC or SF and Napa would be great choices. Can anyone give any advice on either place? Or somewhere else?

JMHO - I would say SF. I live on the east coast (and have worked in NYC for years) and have vacationed to SF. For a romantic, childless vaca, I would say SF.:goodvibes

My dh and I took an adult only trip to SF two October's ago. It was WONDERFUL. We didn't stay for a whole week, but we were able to do some really fun things. My cousin lives there, so she took us to a few places, but mostly, we did our own thing. One of the things we did was an eco-van tour of Muir Woods and Wine Tasting. We went to Sonoma and visited three vineyards, with a stop in the town on Sonoma for lunch on our own. We had a GREAT time....We did two smaller vineyards and one larger one...the smaller ones were AWESOME, because they gave us full-sized glasses and not just sips, of wine! It was really really fun!

We also did a night-time Alcatraz tour which I highly recommend, and we did the other touristy things like riding a cable car, and Fisherman's Wharf.

We live about an hour and a half from NYC and while it is fun for the day, I really don't think I could spend a week just in the city. There is only so much money for Broadway Shows, and you can only do so many museums. After that, what's left? The other touristy stuff doesn't take that much time to do...

I love the Big Apple! BUT....for a romantic trip without kids, I'd definitely go to San Francisco. Beautiful and so much to see and do.

Have fun planning!

I love them both, but San Fransisco without the kids will be a fabulous vacation.

Well, I live in NY and go to the city alot but I LOVE San Francisco. DH and I went there without kids about 10 years ago and it was so much fun. Muir Woods was amazing, Alcatraz was my favorite. We aslo took a bus trip to Carmel and Monterey. One day we walked from the Wharf all the way into the city and back. Another day we just hung out around the Wharf and found a bar with live music and ended up hanging out all day. It was one of the best trips of my life!! I really want to go back with the kids one day soon!

Gosh--thanks for the replies--I guess SF is the clear winner!!!!

I will post on the CA board--did not know we had one. I am going to need lots of help!!!

I grew up in NY and my niece went to Stanford so I visited there a lot. LOVE SF!! Wow, I never thought I'd like a town as much as I love my hometown! I love the weather, the people, just not the real estate prices~:scared1: It's the only reason I never moved there.

October in San Francisco will be very nice. We lived in San Jose and Hollister(south of SF) and visited SF every chance we got. My husband and I went to SF for a weekend vacation before we moved to the area. It was lovely and very romantic . If you like to do tours try Alcatraz or a Bay tour by taking the boats from Fisherman's Wharf. Have dinner, lunch or breakfast at ALL of the fabulous restaurants. Everyone has their favorites.. get some sourdough bread from a local bakery, visit China Town, North Beach, Sausalito, visit the Castro District, take a trolley ride, take some time for Ghiradelli, check out the Art Galleries, The Golden Gate Bridge, sing I left my heart in San Francisco .. do it.. everybody does! ;) Lots of stuff to do and see... but you can also enjoy peace and quiet too. I hope you have a grand time! :hippie:

Yup! And don't forget to do the Rice-a-Roni thing when you ride a cable car. They don't let you hang off of it while it's moving, but we did that while it was stopped at the station! "ding, ding"....:lmao:
