San Francisco in August

Hi,

I'm scheduled for a training trip to San Francisco in August. I'm staying on Fisherman's Wharf, about a block away from the ocean.

I don't plan on having a car, just using the BART, and I'd like to stay in that general region all week. I've got a ticket for the Alcatraz Night Tour for my last night in the city, and I plan to do the Fort at the Presidio and the National Park ships on the wharf and see the seals if I have time.

Can any native San Franciscans help out with more information on food and clothing? I'm told it is in the 40's to 70's range and that I will definitely need a jacket and will want sweaters. Is that accurate?

What about dining? What's available right there on the wharf? Also, I see that there's an IMAX not far away and by looking it up on the BART website, I can get on a bus right outside my hotel and take it straight to the IMAX in 30 minutes. Is the BART website pretty accurate as per time and convienence? (I want to see HP in IMAX!)

I'm not a native - I grew up 40 miles south but I love the City and visit it often. I was there 2 weeks ago. I highly hghly recommend the Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs exhibit that is at the deYoung Museum.

Layers are always a must. The weather can be cool and damp or warm. You never know. 40's during the day in August would be very very rare if not unheard of, 60's on the other hand would be common.

Generally we wear capris/shorts with a tank top, flip flops and a lighlty lined wind breaker as the daily ensemble. The wind breaker part is important as that wind coming in off the water can be chilly. We tend to run warm, if you are the type that runs cold I would suggest long pants, shoes, socks and perhaps a long sleeve shirt for under the jacket. You can buy sweatshirts on just about every corner so if you are cold there are lots of options.

Eats:
We love the Washington St. Bakery and Restaurant on Washington St. in China Town. We also like the sourdough bread bowls (clam chowder or chili) you can get at the wharf. Pretty much there are cafe's, restaurants, bistro's and diners on every corner. We like to sample different fair as we are wandering from place to place so we eat a lot of snacks opposed to larger sit down meals.

The night tour of Alcatraz is amazing!
