Next May we are taking a trip to Southern California to visit family. While we are there we are going to do make a quick trip to San Francisco. We are looking for a nice/budget hotel. I don't think the location matters as we are going to do the typical tourist things and was planning on taking a tour/trolly tour. We would like a pool but that is the only thing that we want. Does anyone have any recommendations.

TIA

Brace yourself for the fact that San Francisco hotels are going to be on the pricier side. It's one of the few cities with a hotel occupancy rate that is always over 80%. You'll also have to factor in whether there's a convention in the city, and you may want to check the Moscone Convention Center's calendar for that. A big convention will cause a lot of rooms to be booked up in advance, and rates to go up -- not to mention the traffic around the city.

When looking, most of San Francisco's hotels will be clustered around Union Square (including Nob Hill and SoMa (South of Market) hotels), the Financial District, and Fisherman's Wharf. There are some budget motels along Lombard Street in the Marina neighborhood (leading to the Golden Gate Bridge) and scattered throughout SoMa. As a local, I can't recommend any hotel especially, but you'll find what look to be decent deals occasionally on Groupon and LivingSocial.

Don't forget to check the cost of parking a car if you have one. We have stayed 3 times in Fisherman's Wharf and while we had no car those hotels did have parking fees.

I booked the Travelodge at the Presidio for my upcoming stay in November. I was going to go with the Comfort Inn by the Bay, but the customer service comments of the Travelodge won me over. This is my first time traveling a new city with my mom (who is NOT a planner,) so I'm going to need all the friendly staff I get access :) Sadly, there is no pool.

It's a good location depending on what you want to do. It looks to be right down the street from the Presidio. We love the Presidio, its historical military buildings, and its miles of trails and hikes. There, you can check out the Yoda statue at ILM and about a 10 minute walk in is the Walt Disney Family Museum. Your hotel is also near the Palace of Fine Arts, which is very postcard San Francisco. You're also close to Chrissy Field and a nice walk along the bay shore to the Golden Gate Bridge.

For dining and shopping, you're close to the commercial strips along Chestnut Street and further up the hill is Union Street.

But, you are quite far from the typical San Francisco tourist neighborhoods of Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf.

We love the Triton a Hotel in Union Square/Chinatown, Sir Francis Drake in Union Square, and most of the hotels in Fisherman's Wharf (Hyatt, Ramada, most any of them). SF is pricey almost all year and parking is usually never included. You can sometimes find deals in the tourist areas for 150-200 a night.

As far as a pool; I have stayed in SF hundreds of times and rarely remember staying in a hotel with a pool; maybe an indoor one at some of the chains but never outdoor since most of the year, especially summer, can be chilly. So can't comment on that.

The Hyatt in Fisherman's Wharf (which is one of our favorite hotels) has one . We only put our feet in it but did sit and relax by it a couple of afternoons on the last trip. It was outside in a courtyard

How funny; never even noticed it and have stayed here. And don't get me wrong; love to swim...just usually looking more for a fire to curl up by, have a drink and stay warm. :)

;) ran in to a couple of May days when it was sunny and 70 in the afternoon. Of course the 1st day was rainy and 60 :)
