the kids have done the AK "zoo", the memphis zoo, and the st. louis zoo...in fact, i think the kids probably have had enuf of zoos....but we will be in southern california.....should we spend/waste a day on a zoo that everyone else has since copied?? thanks for your input

SD Zoo is Great, but can be pricey. Are you going to be in SD anyway?

The LA zoo is terrific, too. And they reciprocate with other zoos, so if you have a membership to your local zoo, you can use it there too.
SD zoo does not reciprocate.:(

goofyme,

Are you planning a trip to SD anyway, or were you just wondering if it would be worth taking some extra time away to go there?

The reason I ask is that another option if you're looking for things to do in SD, is the San Diego Wild Animal Park, where animals roam "free," sort of. I love SD and would go there for a few days if I had the time. They also have Sea World too. I personally love the SD zoo, but I haven't been to many "big" zoos like you have.

A note to remember---the wild animal park is great, but it is NOT in San Diego even tho' it is named that! It is about 35-40 minutes north and inland--of the two, I would choose the animal park over the zoo, but it is NOT in san diego proper and would entail a "road trip" Remember to PM me for more details!

gosh darn luvtigger, wer u bean a smartee???

y, id bean two yore diego zou b4, jus knot me kidz... k-now, all de zous luk jus lik it cus them cope it...cept moast zous lik yourse don't hav no skyride ain busses dat sit on one anudda....ain't u luckee!!!!!!!

i guess i should not have put "waste" a day since it offended you...my apologies. it was actually put in to see if it was worth it. like i said, i have been to the san diego zoo before and was impressed...sorry if you haven't been to the other fine zoos (uh, big) i have mentioned. you would probably be surprised with what these zoos have to offer. actually my favorite zoo so far has been the audubon zoo in new orleans....

again, i didn't mean to offend. yes, i will be in s.d. for a couple of days and probably going to legoland and trying to decide whether to do sea world, zoo, wildanimalpark, or just hang at a beach....

It's hot there though. ;)

So if the kids have been to several Zoos, and unless they are REALLY into animals, I'd suggest either the Beach or Sea World.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Zoo and Wild Animal Park, enough so that I'm a Member (season pass holder) even though I live about 900 miles away! ;) But as a basic thing to most kids, it's nice and all, but not different enough to make them ooohhh and aaahhh like us older kids do. :p

If they are REALLY into animals, then I'd suggest the Wild Animal Park over the Zoo, if only because it's not like any Zoo out there.

Ack! Goofyme, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a smarty-pants or anything! I wasn't offended at all by your post! I am definitely not an expert on San Diego, but I didn't know if you'd been there before, and I know of people who thought that SD was closer to Anaheim than it really is!

Anyway, I'm sorry if the tone of my post did not sound friendly, I really am a friendly person! (Most of the time!) ;)

San Diego Zoo is a world renowned zoo - but it is still a zoo. Depending on what your family likes to do would dictate whether you should make it a priority.
The Wild Animal Park is something completely different. It is so impressive and I have never been anywhere and seen anything else quite like it.
The bummer is that it is in a random spot north (and inland) of San Diego. It has to be because it is so big and land in Southern California is a very precious commodity so in order to set up this operation and still have room to grow this is a good spot for them.
I highly recommend it and if you have transportation and time (a whole day) during your trip then I personally would choose it over the zoo. But it is an all day event to see it and get there. If your family likes zoological parks then you should consider visiting it. It is really cool.
