San Diego/LA

We are spending a few nights in San Diego and then traveling up to LA/Anaheim. Before we hit Disney we wanted to spend a few days seeing Universal, Santa Monica pier, Hollywood highlights like sign, walk of fame, Grumman theater) and possibly an day at the beach. Does it make sense to stay around universal city (Hilton or Sheraton) as a base? Thought about Huntington Beach for a night on way to universal city but wondering if that makes sense. Beaches better there or in San Diego?

I personally like the beaches in Orange County better than anywhere else. I live 5 minutes from several beaches in San Diego. Huntington Beach is gorgeous and very relaxing, lots of sand.
