Embassy Suites Downtown San Diego might work for the five of you. It's close to Sea World, the Zoo and other touristy spots (Seaport Village, Old Town, Gaslamp Quarter, USS Midway) if you're interested in checking these places out as well.

The Cattamarran(sp) did well for the 6 of us. Its on the bay and 10 minutes to SDZ.

We just stayed at Embassy Suites La Jolla. It was great for 5 of us. Breakfast was great, there were washers and dryers for the guest, indoor heated swimming pool, 2 tvs in the room. If you have a AAA card there will be an additional discount.

We stayed in a place that I think was called The Dana @ Mission Bay. Beautiful setting and free shuttle to SW which was pretty close by. SD is probably my fave city. I'd move there if it werent so darned expensive!
