We're thinking of going to San Antonio for spring break and I need tips on all kinds of things. I really want to go to Sea World to pet a dolphin and we're also thinking about Fiesta Texas and the Alamo. I was just wondering things like where would be the best place to stay that's close to everything and what are some things that I shouldn't miss?

It's a good time for Fiesta, not hot yet. It is in an old quarry and doesn't get a breeze very often in the summer.

We just spent a weekend in SA in early Feb. We stayed at the Hyatt on the Riverwalk. The internet price for the weekend was $129 a night. It is just across from the Alamo. A diversion of the river runs through the lobby. You can walk to anywhere on the Riverwalk, just a trolley ride to the Mexican Market and a short drive to Fiesta, Sea World, the zoo.

If you want to stay on the RiverWalk, be careful. Some hotels say they are on the river, but they are not on the River Walk. Check a map of the address on Mapquest to be sure. The RiverWalk is a loop off the SA river.

There is an IMAX in the Rivercenter Mall on the riverwalk. They were showing Lion King last month.

For the best Mexican food in town, go to the Mexican Market and eat at Mi Tierra. They have the best Carne Guisada (beef tips) I have ever had. The Mole Chicken is very good, but very spicy. My boys like the fajitas there too.

Now how did I know you would recommend Mi Tierra ;) Buz is right though, good food and a great atmosphere. Not to mention a great mexican bakery right there too :)

Our cousin lives in SA.We went to visit him last July. He owns the Comfort Suites (Airport North) so we stayed there for 6 days and are going back this June again:) . We did the Riverwalk,IMAX Theater,Alamo, etc. If you get a chance you should try the San Francisco Steakhouse. It has great western theme, with good food.
San Antonio is a great, fun city and we can't wait to go back this summer and go to Fiesta Texas and Sea World also.

Buz,
My cousins parents (my uncle) lives in Round Rock also.We went to visit him also while we were in SA.

River walk Marriot is nice. Right next to the Mall too.

My parents live in San Antonio. I haven't stayed in a hotel there in years, since they do live there and I stay with them now. But I have stayed at the Ramada Emily Morgan. It's right across from the Alamo (which is basically across the street from the Riverwalk), and it's really nice. When I stayed there, I called just to find out what their rates were, not really intending to book right away. When I asked about their rates and then just thanked the guy without booking, he gave me an awesome rate on a jucuzzi (sp?) room. It was a really nice room.

Thanks for the tips. We love Mexican food and we might just have to try that Mi Tierra.

San Antonio is a fun town. Sea world can be a blast. There is a behind the scenes tour that is very good.

The Hyatt Hill Country is a very nice hotel to stay at.

I'm on my way out of work for the day...when I get home I'll post more details. I truly love SA and we never run out of things to do/see. More later this evening.

OK, Here's what I can tell you. Fiesta Texas will be quite crowded on the weekends of Spring Break...if you can hit it on a weekday, like a Mon or Tues, it may not be as crowded. We usually get season passes and do the rides before it gets too hot, like March thru June, and the waterpark the rest of the summer. We like SeaWorld ok, but FT seems to have more to do. However, if you can do both, you'll enjoy all the shows at SW.

Hotel...if you can stay downtown then you will certainly be near the action. And you needn't worry about being right on the riverwalk. Just about all hotels downtown have easy access to the downtown trolleys. Our downtown is very compact and easy to get around by foot or on trolley. Last summer we stayed at the Holiday Inn off 35 and Durango for a weekend. My kids absolutely loved it. We were across the street from a trolley pick/up. Although I wouldn't recommend the restaurant at HI, it was an OK room. My DH and I have also stayed at the St. Anthony which is a Crowne Plaza (?) hotel and one of the oldest hotels in the city. It has the best - although pricey - Sunday Brunch I have ever had. It's quite elegant and stately. It's in downtown, but not on the river so the rates can be very reasonable.

Other places I would suggest for a distinct SA flavor would be La Mansion which used to be a school. It is on the riverwalk and expensive, if I remember correctly. I stayed there once for a business meeting years ago and the rooms are absolutely lovely. It has saltillo tile throught the hotel. We've had brunch there for Thanksgiving twice and it's quite good. If you like the Marriot group and are on their rewards program, you might want to consider the Marriot Plaza rather than the other two Marriots that are on the Riverwalk (Marriot Rivercenter and Marriot Riverwalk which are actually directly across the street from one another.) The Marriot Plaza is still right in downtown and a couple of blocks from an entrance to the Riverwalk. We've had a friend stay there and we visited him. This hotel is also charming and unique. It has an awesome courtyard that is landscaped immaculately. There are actually one (or two, I forget) beautiful peacocks that roam the courtyard. Nice fitness center, too. Great pool from what I could tell. It is right next to La Villita. If you have a hotel in mind, let me know and perhaps I can tell you if it's in a desirable location or not.

Food...MY FAVORITE SUBJECT!! Mi Tierra is nice and located in El Mercado which is closer to I-35. However, there is a place just across I-35 called Pico de Gallo. It's pretty good. I think they also have Mariachi's on the weekends. They also serve a great breakfast.
One of my fav's is Rosario's. It is located on Presa St. and St Mary's (I think). It is rather ecletic and artsy. My favorite are the fish tacos which is actually more popular in So. California/Baja area. It's hard to find them locally. My husband really likes the Caldo with Fidello (vermicelli). However, the chicken fajitas are not that spectacular. There is weekend entertainment and always a long wait - the better for sipping their great Margaritas.

Now if you're adventurous and want to veer off the beaten path...take Commerce street from downtown westward. A few blocks before you get to the intersection of W. Commerce and Gen. McMullen, there is a mom and pop restaurant called Lisa's on the left side. There have been several great reviews locally in our paper about this restaurant. It has a varied menu with all the basics, plus great "homestyle" plates such as carne guisada, puerco asado (grilled pork) in a green salsa gravy or a red salsa gravy. Their tortillas are sooo good!! Also, puffy tacos are a SA originals and are the best.

Of course there are the usual tourist traps on the Riverwalk and I really wouldn't recommend any of them to be outstanding food, but probably Rio Rio is best known and pretty decent. It's the restaurant with the colorful umbrella table right on the banks of the river.

Must sees: The Alamo (of course), IMAX is cool, The Rivercenter Mall - pretty nifty. One of my favorite things to take the kids to - Texas Institute of Cultures. It's very kid-friendly, interactive.

Do take advantage of the Via trolleys downtown. They're like 50cents and include transfers. Keep track of which "color" line you're on, because not all colors stop by all major attractions and you may need to transfer.

OK, I'm pumped and ready to go downtown this weekend!! If you have any questions, feel free to email me. We actually just bought another car and decided that besides the Fiesta Texas annual passes, the only other vacation splurge we'll take this summer is another stay downtown.

Thanks Vicki, I knew you would be an "expert" on SA. We can't wait until June 27-July 4th.!!:bounce:

Wow Vicki, thanks for all that info! I'm gonna print that out so I can refer back to it. I have some questions though. How far away are Sea World and Fiesta Texas from Downtown? I'd like to be able to be close to everything so I can at least try to do everything. We'll also have two kids with us (ages 5 and 10 months) so are there any specificly good kid-friendly places? Also, how many days do you think would be necissary to stay to see all this stuff?

Princess Aurora, I'm not sure what the mileage from Downtown to the theme parks...maybe 15 or so. But it's really the amount of time you'll want to know because of traffic. To Seaworld, you'll take I-35South to 90West (towards Del Rio). You'll see the 151 exit. It's probably about 20 minutes in light traffic. To Fiesta you'll take I-35South to 10West towards El Paso. You'll see the La Cantera exit that goes to FT. It'll be about 20 minutes also.

I would think about 5 days would get you well acquainted with the city and enough time to enjoy the hi-lights. If you want to visit areas in the Hill Country, like Fredericksburg or San Marcos give yourself another day.

I'm off to a church meeting. I'll check later to see if you have any more questions.

Vicki

Mi Tierra is a must everytime we go to San Antonio. We went to San Antonio on our Honeymoon and stayed at La Mansion. It is wonderful hotel right on the River Walk. We ate breakfast on the balcony.

Princess_Aurora - we had a section in the paper a few weeks ago with discounts for San Antonio. There all all kinds of hotel codes and discounts to Sea World, the zoo, the IMAX and Fiesta Texas. PM me if you are interested as I don't think we will be going any time soon.

I forgot about the zoo...that would be great for your kids and it's pretty extensive. Also, near the zoo off of Broadway is the Witte Museum. It has a special kids section that is 3 stories high and it's all interactive. That could be one days worth of activities for the kids.

Be sure to do the river barge ride while you're on the Riverwalk. It's about an hour long (maybe 45 min.) and the barge operator will give you a nice upbeat short history of some of the buildings downtown. Remember to look up at the old Nix Hospital building.

Go to MySA.com for more local information like special events going on the week you are here.

I'm very excited for you guys visiting SA as I think it's one of the most charming large cities I've ever experienced.

Nick, any special plans this summer when you visit??

Vicki,
So far we have planned Fiesta Texas,Sea World, Riverwalk, try a lot of different restraunts, and check out Boerne,Texas. My cousin has a hotel up there also.We will be in SA for 7 days so we have more time this year.;)

I live in San Antonio and recently ate at Mi Tierra. It was terrible. We had not eaten there in years and decided to treat my niece to dinner downtown one night while she was in town. The service was slow, chips were stale and the food was greasy. I also thought it was on the pricey side compared to some other nice Mexican Rest. in the area. I was so surprised by this because so many people love the place and there are always lines of locals and tourist waiting to eat. We will not go back. There are too many other places in SA. We love to go to Tomatillio's. It is on Broadway, close to downtown, Alamo Cafe is also good, Martha's Mexican Rest. is good, but very large portion.....and we can't forget Taco Cabana. :)
There is so much to do in SA, but if you are coming in the summer....bring lots of sunscreen, hats, shorts and cool tops. It is hot and humid here.
