San Angel Inn - Sub Desert for Small App?

We are on the dining plan and was wondering if we can sub out the desert for something else at San Angel Inn?

None of the deserts really appeal to us and we have the Illuminations Desert party that night, so we want to save room for sweets.

Generally, if a dessert substitution is allowed it is for a non-menu item, generally a fruit cup or cup o soup. Most of the third-party owned eateries, like SAI, don't do it at all.

Some table service restaurants will let you make a substitution for the dessert, but it is up to the restaurant if they will do it and the item will be something of their choosing. Typically as auroraborealis said, it will be something like a small side salad or a cup of soup, but it will not be anything from the menu. Not all restaurants will do it so you will have to ask, but be prepared for them to say no, especially at third party restaurants.
