San Angel Inn allergy caution

I have an allergy to cilantro so normally I would not even try San Angel. But kids were interested so I was willing to give it a shot. I mentioned the allergy when making the ADR, mentioned it to the greeter and the server. But they did not bring the chef out and served a sauce on the appetizer which had cilantro and my entree was cross contaminated.

I did bring the issue to the attention of Guest Relations and I'm sure it will be taken care of. It didn't ruin our vacation by any means.

If you have allergies you might need to be a bit more forceful at this venue than at others.

Wow! Did you alert the manager while you were there? If the server failed to tell the chef about the allergy they could/would lose their job.

Shame on me, I did not. I just assumed the server would run my selections past the chef. By the time dinner was over I just wanted to get out of there, mainly because I took my emergency meds and could barely remain awake, but also because I hate those people who have the 'something happened and now my entire vacation is ruined, I want X, Y, and Z.!'

Later in the week I learned that it was SOP to bring the chef out. Every other Disney restaurant we dined at either did so or the server at least said they would run my selections past the chef.

Heck, on Tuesday I was at The Plaza at the MK and when we got to leave the manager came over with a certificate for a FastPass because she thought we waited too long to see the chef. I didn't really think there was any delay.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm not really saying there is a reason why it didn't get to the Chef, but since Epcot hires a lot of people from the Countries they work in it's possible for things to get lost in translation. I know i've had it a couple of times when dining at La Hacienda, I couldn't understand the waitress, and they couldn't understand me (I have a thick Southern accent).

I would have notified the Manager or written Guest Services once I got home. There is really no excuse if it was listed on your reservation, and you relayed it to the server. Since the manager (i've noticed) at most of the pavilion restaurants all speak fluent english, they should have been able to help you.

Once again, i'm sorry it happened and I hope your vacation was great.

Fortunatly that server will never make that mistake again, most likely because they wont have a position once it goes through the channels.

An allergy is supposed to be marked in red or stamped on your white slip. Before you even place a drink order that is to be given to the chef. Now if the chef is taking too long to get to you the server should get the manager. No allergy should ever be forgotten or overlooked.

Im really sorry OP. Really wish you had let the manager know when you were there though so the server could have been pulled from the floor before they made a deadly error

Note, San Angel Inn is NOT a Disney owned and operated restaurant. As such, they may have rules and procedures in place that are much different then the Disney operated locations. As in, different or none at all. They should be treated as any other normal "outside" restaurant.

Disney requires THEIR restaurants to follow specific procedures. They do not require this of the non Disney owned places.

my sons bf throat will close if he east any nut product so i am sorry for what you had to deal with

Thats exactly why we usually avoid the EPCOT world showcase restaurants unless they have no peanuts on their menu.

The only world showcase place we have eaten at is the CS in morocco and they were great with my allergies (I am allergic to eggs as well). But unfortunately, since those restaurants are not owned by Disney, they don't necessarily follow the same standards. And cilantro is defintely a very hard one at a mexican restaurant.

Now, I definitely think you should have said something, just because they should be aware of it.
