We will be traveling to Vancouver at the end of the month for the Alaska cruise in September. Is Samsung Pay, or any smart phone pay system, readily accepted in the shops, restaurants, and taxis throughout the city?

I have not seen ApplePay being used widely, locals confirmed that as well - appears to be somewhat behind US rollout, and way behind Europe.

Yeah I don’t think Apple/Samsung Pay is commonplace in Canada yet. But contactless credit/debit payment is rather ubiquitous. So kind of curious in that respect.

ApplePay is definitely behind the US in numbers of places that take it so I wouldn't rely on it. I'm starting to see more places offer it but it seems to be primarily at larger companies (e.g., McDonald's) rather than small local places although those are increasing in number but slowly.

I hardly see it in anything but big chains here in Chicago. Walgreens, Dunkin Donuts, McD’s.

We were there earlier this summer and I never saw anywhere that took it. However, what I did appreciate is if you were paying by CC, they always brought the machine to you so your CC was never actually leaving your sight.

The phrase “I’ll go get the machine” is so commonplace now that I’m sort of taken aback when I don’t hear it.

Canada is very much a contactless country. ApplePay, et al are all accepted anywhere you can tap. People may or may not use it, but that's their choice. It is certainly available. My son always uses ApplePay. I'd rather dig out my card than put my data on my phone. Everyone's different, but the technology is readily available in Canada and has been for a few years.

Thank you @FigmentSpark. I'm use to just tap and go.

It’s funny how I was in Epcot today and I saw machines at kiosks with places for tap and a chip card slot... yet they’re not equipped for use yet.

But at Chefs De France they have The Machine so I was able to do chip and pin like normal. Guess the roll out is slow at WDW parks?

How funny that you should say that. It never even occurred to me that it's been years since a restaurant actually took my credit card away; they usually bring the machine automatically. I can't even think of a place I've been to in the last few years where they didn't bring the machine.

Payments with smartphones are available in Canada both Samsung and Google pay are both accepted on any machine that allows tap to pay. ASpple Pay is only at larger business because of apple charges additional fee to the merchent for them to use it, just like how some credit card complienes do the same as well.

Same here in New Mexico, everyone takes Samsung Pay but few take Apple Pay. Its funny when someone behind me in line sees I use my phone and they say their's never works. I ask if they have Apple Pay and they say YES. I say 'Wee, no wonder, Samsung Pay works everywhere'.

Yes it absolutely is used here in Vancouver. I'm with Figment; my hubby does it with his phone all the time while I prefer to take my card out and tap. Drives him crazy that I won't use my phone to pay :rotfl2:

I did Apple Pay all over WDW, including F&G booths last March

So again, kind of weird. I was trying to tap with my card and... nothing. But Apple Pay... sure, no problem!

Tbh I think its just a slowish rollout with the tap and chip/pin at the parks. Next time I’m there I expect it will be working everywhere.

That is strange because my understanding was Apple Pay was much less accepted but any place that took Apple Pay, tap with Card should work (plus a lot more.) I haven’t tried it because I only have a couple cards that would work and already have Applepay set up

That’s what I find strange. Maybe they changed systems. Maybe the temp booths had Apple Pay. I can only tell you what happened to me this week.

FWIW I haven’t bothered setting up Apple Pay. I see where the value is in having the ability to pay from your phone - after all, I do things like buy Starbucks using Wallet - but if I can’t yet use it everywhere, and it’s not difficult to use my card as it is, I simply don’t have the proper motivation to make the switch.

I shop at Aldi every week, they take ApplePay. Plus when I set it up, my credit card was giving 5% bonus for using it. Motivation enough for me.
